Long over due update

Hi all. Thanks for the words of encouragement! The project has come to a grinding stop until this week. Life and work has gotten in the way of this project as I feared it would. I have not even had time to poke around here on this site. I cannot believe it's already June and this project is at this stage. I had visions of driving it by now I thought I could get this done from first cut to finished project in two months. I will be lucky if I can get it done in six months now. Good things come to those who wait?!?! I have found renewed drive for this project seeing some movement this week! So that is good. My worst fear is I get tired of the project and the Jeep sits in unusable condition in the garage for years.

The top was finely cut and I had to wait about a month to get it worked on by the fiberglass guy I wanted to stretch the top out. The glass is out and the top is back on the Jeep in two sections. The pics give a better idea about what I can expect it to look like when its finished. I also installed the tom woods drive shaft today.

Just because pictures are worth a 1,000 words here is some visual stimulation Sorry for some of the back lighting, it was hard to get the camera to cooperate inside the shop.

No, I don't go to school at BCS, my fiance does, but I will be moving there when I get out of the Army at the end of the month. Then working for FMC Technologies.

I was going to post and tell you how awesome I think this build is and then I saw you ETS at the end of the month and became jealous. Gorgeous build though. I subbed it.

FMC sounds familar but I cannot quite place it. BCS has changed a lot since I lived up there though. It's a nice town. I enjoyed my time there.

I am going to use a local product called lizard skin. It will help fight heat transfer from the under body and I plan to spray the inside of the hard top to keep the inside nice and cool! That under dash a/c unit has a very hard time keeping up with the Tx heat.

Sorry, I mixed up people there. ETS is the end of your contract with the army.

I know all about build delays, I am nearing 2 years on mine. Yours Looks great though. I love that you are stretching the hard top. Kinda reminds me of the CJ-8 Overland.

New updates

This is what was used to keep the wet glass from sagging.

Support removed and glass dry.

Both bottom sections glassed in.

It is in very rough shape at this point. Still lots of support work and detail work to be done. However, it is surprisingly sturdy even at this stage.

Looks good.

I stretched mine 12". But with Rockwells and 4WS. My wheelbase will be 115".

So what made you decide to go with a lengthened YJ and not just an LJ? Just a YJ fan?

Thanks, I have had to learn to wait with this build but I am thinking it will be worth it in the end.

Yes bolt on isn't quite as gratifying as going beyond the normal mods. I have had a few people call this project crazy.

Will you be running a soft top? Someone brought up the idea of 4WS on mine and I have considered it but for now it's on the back burner. I don't really have a need for it at this point. From my limited knowledge of 4WS I think it's easiest to do on Rockwells. Those are overkill for my use at this point. GM had 4WS on their trucks and suburbans a few years ago might be able to find a junk yard axle in the future.

No top on mine. Mine will be strictly a trail rig. Rockwells axles, 4WS, 467ci BBC, 46.5" Michelin XML's.

When I stretched my frame I cut the rear frame axle hoops off and went straight back with boxed tubing.

Because I can. The used LJ market is nuts. People think they are rare and can charge lots for them.

The whole time i'm browsing this thread i'm wondering... "What the heck is he going to do for a top when he's done??"

Then you cut a hard top in half...

Is there no limit to your fabrication comfort level? NICE WORK!

I have a yj project in my basement, im still planning out. This would be freaking cool. Is the wheelbase extention just for the cool factor? Or are you building this for the trails and want the wheelbase for wheelin?

What can I say... When you have an itch to cut stuff in half why not go all out? Cool factor? Yes.. Better ride, more cargo, better leg room, a real roll bar for occupants and last but not least, light to moderate trail use nothing hard core (still working within the limits of stock axles with gears and locker) I do expect to have an easier time with obstacles with the longer wheel base

Ok i can see the pictures of the fiberglass work now. Good work by the way and thanks too. What are your plans for windows now that they'll be longer? Will lj windiws work now?

LJ windows are much smaller. They will have to be custom cut and tempered glass. The prototype LJ hardtop had much larger windows than the production model. What got you going with the idea of a similar project?

Well a few things for one to be different. I live in iowa so its a waste to run 44's and linked but this is something totally different. But also its usable. One of the short comings of the wrangler is just plain old usable space. I figured if i was going to go through the work of lengthening the wheelbase to improve the ride (another yj issue) i just as well legnthen the entire body/frame and kill two bids with one stone.

BINGO!!!!!!!!

I completely agree. I have moved myself from Texas to Florida and back in that Jeep and there was not much room for me to put it in 5th with all my stuff. I am sure it looked funny with stuff stacked to the top.

More pics!!

There has been more progress on the top. The bottom section that sits on the tub has been strengthened and more layers of glass are being added. The interior got a solid run from the back window to the rib above the driver and passengers head for additional strength.

The top still needs more work on the upper section of the window and needs glass built up so it can be sanded down to a smooth finish. You can see where the new glass is because it is a little transparent. All that will be gone when it gets hit with a gel coat after the final prep work. You shouldn't be able to tell the top is modified by looking at it once it is done! Here are the pictures!!

Sweet! May be none of my business but roughly how much is the fiberglass working? Also was this a specialty shop or a body shop?

It's a boat shop. I haven't gotten the final bill. It should be less than a lj top or a custom job from a place like gr8tops.

Not to be downing your truck or anything, u would have moved the rear up a couple inches so there's not a huge gap between the door and wheel. Btu the Jeep looks awesome!. What do you plan on using for glass? plexiglass?
