I noticed that the parts jeep has a family style roll cage in it, do you plan on using that one or putting the sport bars back in?

Tim, I'm going with the family rollbar and plan to add some tubing to it later.

Going 8.8!

I just couldn't stand putting the D35 back under the Jeep, mostly because it looked so bad, and I planned to do a swap later anyways.

So, I picked up an 8.8 from a 1998 Explorer Friday from the local salvage yard for $175. Soon I'll be acquiring the rest of the parts for the swap.

Since I decided to go with an 8.8 swap sooner than expected, i'll have to wait to add the lift and axles to the frame.

Saturday, I worked on tearing down the black Jeep and getting ready to pull the motor and drivetrain. Of course, the rust slowed me down. I'm leaving for vacation the middle of the week and plan to pull the motor soon after I get back.

End of the Day Saturday

Perfect time to do the rear end swap. If your don't already have them the adapter to go from the 8.8 flange to a 1310 ujoint is Spicer part number 2-2-1379. Then the bolts to attach it are Ford part number N800594-S100, they are actually discontinued but my local dealership still had 4 in stock last week when I went to get mine.

Thanks. I tried to get the flange while I was at the salvage yard, but they wouldn't sell it to me unless I bought the driveshaft from the Explorer, too.

Back from vacation and ready to continue working on Tomahawk, I started the weekend by removing the grill and radiator and then the seats.

Before I left, My new 5/8 lift lubeable boomerang shackles came in.

When I pulled the carpet I could see how bad the floorboard rust was... Worse than I thought, but I'm sure some of you have seen far worse.

I found a spoon in the windshield frame when I lowered it.

I had to cut several bolts to get the rollbar off, I'll probably be replacing a lot of the Torx bolts with Allen\Hex head bolts.

End of the day - Sunday

I hope to get the dash apart and out this week. I also plan to start getting the motor\trans ready to pull, ordering the 8.8 parts and maybe getting the 8.8 ready for the new parts.

I finally got the dash and the steering column removed from the black Jeep today. It was a PITA, especially since it was my first time to remove either of them. I still need to get the heating\cooling components removed, pedals, plus a few other things. Then all I have left is pulling the motor and gas tank then I get the black Jeep out of the shop and have some more work room.

Most of the week that I was able to get in the shop was spent on another project for work. I did get the shackles, lift springs, axles and wheels back on so I could roll it out of the way to work on the other project. Since the 8.8 is not ready yet, I had to use the D35 for now.

Next weekend I have to go out of town, so I won't get much done, but as soon as I get back I'm going to pick a motor hoist.

I borrowed a motor hoist from a friend and planned to pull the motor this weekend. However, I forgot to get the telescoping extension for the hoist. So I decided to take the body off to make it easier to get the scrap Jeep out of the shop since it no longer has axles.

Yeah, the shop is new... a tree fell on my old shop (large shed), which put my build off for about 8 months. But, I got a new shop from the insurance money. I was thrilled the day it fell.

Oh yeah, I forgot... I also dropped the wheels off for powder coating yesterday. He said it may be 2 weeks before he can get to them.

I haven't gotten much done in the last week due to a herniated disk in my back, which hurts like a SOB. I've been trying to do some little things, but not really anything to report on.

I did order new Brown Dog motor mounts and Energy Suspension transmission mount.

I got the new motor mounts from Brown Dog Offroad installed this weekend. They look like they'll last forever. Also, pressure washed the motor and trans.

I picked up my Ravine wheels today from the powder coat shop and I'm thrilled with them. I'm ordering tires tomorrow, hopefully, they are in and mounted by Saturday.

New wheels and tires have arrived!

Packed them in the back of the WJ and still had room for Trixie.

Ravine wheels covered in 32x11.50 Cooper Discoverer STT's.

New vs Old

Mounted!

I was told by someone that they no longer make the STT's. Did you get left overs or was I mis-informed? You will like them by the way.

I haven't heard about them being discontinued and my tire guy didn't mention it. I did a quick Google search and found an old thread that mentioned ST's were discontinued, but not STT's. Either way, glad I didn't wait... just in case.

We worked on building trans crossmember this weekend. I want to build a crossmember that is independent of the skid plate, so that when the skid plate is removed the trans will stay in place. I think we should be able to get it welded up, painted and installed next weekend. We'll build the skid plate later.

Later this week, I'll be dropping the tub of at the local tech center for body work and paint.

Today I dropped the tub, roll bar and hood off at the local tech school for body work and paint. I'll have to take the doors, fenders and windshield frame later.

I cut up the old frame to make it easier to load when I take it to the scrapyard. It took 12 cutting disks to get the frame cut down to manageable pieces.

I also started cutting the unnecessary parts off of the 8.8.

On the way for body work and paint.

The inside of the old frame was filled with rust and who knows what else.
