YJ audio system build.

Hey!

Ok, so I decided to start the install of the audio system on the YJ.....and will be documenting it here for the benefit of the forum.

There's several premises I'm going from.....

- Its got to be as stealthy as possible, with the least 'steal-able' components.

- Its got to have a sub..... a sound system without a sub is not complete in my mind, as a good part of the audio spectrum is not being reproduced and therefore missing. I Want only one sub, either 8", or 10".

- The sub should not take any storage space.

- A head unit is not desired or necessary, they are thief magnets, and most of what I listen to on the road is mp3...besides, playing CDs on a vehicle that's vibrating and jumping around, not good.

- Since I will have a sub, an amplifier is needed, (Don't want more than 1) and if I'm going to have one, that could also drive the 2-way speakers. This means I will use a 3 channel amp if using one sub and a pair of 2-way speakers, or a 5 channel amp if using one sub and two pairs of 2-way speakers. It will need to be installed as stealthy as possible.

So I'm in the least fun part now...waiting for parts to arrive.....should start in the next few days, and will post pics as I go...

Later!

YJ audio system build.

I have the Polk dxi's all around in my YJ as well. Nice little speakers. A definite improvement over the stock speakers. I would love to have a sub but where the heck would it fit without being noticeable to thieves?

In my yj I screwed threw the floor and bolted my speakers and sub down and instead of the screws you use to screw your subs and speakers to the box I drilled holes where they would be and used small screws with the nuts on the end of them so you'd have to get inside of the box to take them off or to take out the box. Oh and I might add I can open the box but it has a lock thing on it. Im not worried about it getting stolen even when the top is off!

Question: Im not good with sound systems at all, and I have stock front speakers, stock radio and the sound wedges. I just spliced them into my front speakers. My stereo doesnt get that loud and crackles alot when i turn it up. What can I do to fix this? PS: The sound wedges dont add much sound at all, they just make it more full and better sounding.
Thanks in advance

Hey!

OK!....getting back to the original intent of this thread....it begins....

The first step was to extract and drill the ashtray for the MP3 player cable connnector.....after drilling, the hole was de-burred and a rubber grommet installed to prevent the metal from cutting up the cable....

This allows the Mp3 cable to be rolled and stowed away (ashtray closed) when not in use.

how are you going to hook your audio cable into your amp to act as a head unit?

Hey!

Ok, starting from the top.....this is the source unit I'll use....its an i pod nano touch (7 th gen)....but pretty much any player can be used....this particular player has FM radio integrated, so I might delete the antenna mount when I paint the jeep.

This is a mock shot, as I am still waiting for a black hard polycarbonate housing Im getting for the player.

Glue a piece of black velcro to the back of player and the other to the dash.

This location was chosen because it is in really close distance of my hand from the shifter, where my hand rides much of the time.

When Jeeping, attach player to dash velcro, pull out cable from ashtray and connect!....

Hey!

Heres a better pic.....will probably move the final mounting a couple inches to the left for the cable to align vertically from the ashtray...

I think this position is better than the stock radio in terms of reach....

Thanks!!

From there we connect to an RCA in/out inline volume control....this will of course be my volume knob, in order to avoid fiddling with the tiny volume buttons on the player itself.....Ill just set the players volume to say 75% and from then on adjust using knob....

I will (paint) black out the face of the volume control to make it less noticeable as what it is....

Im working on the mounting of the volume knob on the gauge bezel, so that should be up in a day or two....

Looking good I figured you were gonna wire into the amp somehow. Now days with Ipods you can do way more that a headunit, find ya a touch and you could download movies or you could hook up an Iphone and stream movies will listening to through the jeeps speakers. This seems like the best bang for the buck, in my dd my head unit has a usb port, my ipod never leaves unless its time to add more music, and antenna that dude got took off immediantly

Hey!

Ok, the amp is here....I decided on a Jensen 4 channel amp (Power 760.4).....I have had good experience with Jensen amps for everyday use on Jeeps.....(No, they will not win any audio quality contests, but I find them a good option for an open top Jeep) and are a good bang for the buck.....

At this point I will only run one pair of 2-way speakers (in the overhead sound bar), on channels 1 and 2.......channels 3 and 4 will be bridged (output combined) to feed a single subwoofer.

Sincce its a 4 channel amp, I need to feed all four channels, so I got a pair of RCA female to dual RCA male "Y's".....hookup is as shown.....

Hey!

I do have plans to detail the amp mounting (Also will be stealthy, protected, and will not take storage space).....unfortunately my brother (and his welder) are inaccessible for the next two weeks.....so at this point I will skip the amp installation, and temporarily move onto the subwoofer install....

Later!

was wondering what you are going to place in the slot for the stock head unit? Might make a good place for a switch panel

Hey!

Im installing the sub in the center console.....firing downward......Im doing a modification right now to divide the inner space of the large cavity for half of it to be the sub box (lower half) and keep the upper half as storage.....Im making a sketch of it....

BC Dony....I actually thought of just *putting* a bunch of cables in there hanging out to get the 'no radio' look...jajjajaj....but the switch panel is a great idea, I might just do that....I also believe someone sells a metal safety drawer that goes in the radio slot....dont recall who sells that.....that would also be an option...
