Picked up our second Jeep. Gonna need a little lovin but I think it will be a good project. For now I think it will be left basically stock. Finding out the intermediate CJ's are not the easiest to find parts for.
A few shots as it sits.
Mechanically everything is good, engine,trans,t/c, diffs. runs good and smooth. Body needs to have some repairs but that isnt too hard to fix. Frame is sound other than one spring hanger that looks like it needs a weld repaired. Brother in-law is a welder so I got that covered since I can weld but there is a reason I don't get paid to do it, it holds but sure doesn't look pretty.
Had some wiring issues with the lights but found some dirty connectors and that fixed that problem. Wipers even worked!!
Just realized the tailgate was off in these pictures, the oldest is learning to run a sander and started with that. Also has a spare tire mounted on the rear. The spare tire rack and tailgate was bolted to the tub. I assume this used to have chains so the tailgate would be supported when it was open. Anyone know if that is correct or where I can find a set of tailgate chains?
Starting to build a list of things it will need... must keep that away from the boss....
Already thinking it will be called Buster or Bruiser... seems I bleed from somewhere every time I work on it. Will work on that later, thanks for taking a look.
Looks like a fun project just went with a buddy to get his first jeep it's a 71 cj needs some work but not bad for $550 even has a 6" spring lift on it already good luck with yours post more pics when you get more progress
Starting to get some of the smaller items taken care of. Brother in-law came over and welded up a couple spots on the frame that were cracked. Replaced the spring shackles and bushings. Hard to see in the first images but most of the springs set kind of crooked. Found out this was because most of the bushings were pretty much worn out and/or gone. Now the springs look like they are sitting straight and made quite a bit of difference in how it rides.
I am certainly not a body man. The front fender was pretty rusted in the back where the 2 layers of metal were. Ended up cutting the back half off and getting some sheet metal to build a new fender. Didn't turn out the greatest as I don't have a brake to bend metal. Used 16ga as that what was available and with a little coaxing it did somewhat give into my command. Cant see it here, but the bend where it mounts to the tub isnt a nice 90* bend. I figure she's a 40yr old girl and if I wanted a perfect Jeep I'd buy a new one. Couple spots to touch up and will give it one more coat of primer then its ready for paint. The inner side was a few colors along with some rust so we sanded it all down and bedlined it.
The hood is now sanded and needs a few dents filled in the we can prime it. The plan right now is if it wont be painted, it will get bedlined.
The used parts shop managed to locate new trans and t/c shifter boots for me.
Much better than the torn up rubber that it has now.
The plans so far are to get the rest of the front clip sanded down/repaired and them move on to the panel repairs on the tub. Really hope to have the metal work done this summer if possible.
The ups guy came and delivered new floor pans and rocker panels along with new poly body mounts. Cant use the whole rocker panel since it doesn't have Jeep formed in them.
The floor needs replaced on both sides and found the support piece rusted out as well. I think some 1/2x2 square tube will work for a new support piece, still have to do some measuring. Benefit is from the edge of the tool box back there is no rust.
Once the floors and rockers are replaced we can finish bed lining the interior. Still have to cut in some patches in the rear around the taillights but its getting closer.
Got the passenger side floor cut out and new support piece tacked in. Fab'd up a new piece for the lower A post. Then mother nature decided to soak everything which stopped our progress as the brother in-law doesn't want to weld in water. Decided to finish on Sunday.
Sunday comes and he is sicker than a dog. Guess the floor will have to wait another week. Had the oldest start sanding down the passenger side to prepare for paint. Got to the rear quarter and found bondo city. Some spots it was at least 1/4" thick or more. Managed to find some good metal that left the wheel opening original so I dont have to make new holes for the flares. Cut out the bad area and mocked up a new patch
Also need to patch the area where the taillight is. Thinking about replacing with flush mount LED but thats not original so haven't made up my mind yet.
Should have this cut out and a new piece ready to take its place. Mount looks good from the back but can fab up a new one if needed. Just need my welder to get better.
Really hope for good weather this weekend so we can burn in some metal.

My welder is still sick so I decided to start cutting out more areas that will need replacing. Removed the gas tank and got both rear areas by the taillights cut out. Will have to fab up some mount braces as they didn't look that good. Also got the drivers seat out to see how much will need replaced. The floor mounts look good from underneath but looks like most of the floor under the seat will need replaced. Will extend it partially up towards the pedals but not as much as the passenger side. Looks like cutting that out will be the next project. Hopefully next weekend my bro-in-law will be feeling better and I will have everything cut out so we can spend the weekend burning metal and have all of the patch panels done. Really want to get the body work done so I can paint before end of summer.

While working on this, we found a body mount brace that was rusted and no way to get to it without removing the tub. Wasn't really planning to go this far but looks like things changed. Removed the tub so we can get to the bottom and repair the brace. Since its off, will make undercoating alot easier. Fathers shop has a wash bay we can use so may as well take it down there and degrease everything and make sure there are no other surprises with the frame. Looked it up and down and didnt see anything but cant hurt to get it clean now.
It looks a little barren without the tub on.
Guess it will also make it easier to run new wiring to the rear since the factory wires seem pretty brittle.... one more thing to add to the list...Been a fun project but seems that when ya go to fix one thing 5 more jump up to get that thing done. Oh well, will all be worth it in the end.
USMC, it was the Daystar Poly body mount kit # DAYKJ04001BK, I ordered it through Northridge so this could be their number, I don't have the package anymore to confirm. Was $28 This is a stock mount with no lift built in, the only problem is it did not include mounts for the grill, only the tub. Will have to re-use the mount for the grill since it wasn't all that bad to begin with.
Will post some updates soon, we got the drivers floor in and have been stitch welding everything together and plug welding to the support pieces. Once the floors all welded up, will get some more pics.
Good luck with your build, the plan is to be basically stock, if my son wants something otherwise, he's free to get a job a modify to his hearts desire. So far he's planning on keeping her fairly stock.
Well we have had issues getting my calendar and the welders calendar to match up. But since the tub is off figured we may as well take that time to get the frame cleaned up. Power washed everything as best as we could. 40yrs of grease takes a bit of work to clean. Have most of the frame cleaned and primed now. The outside of the frame rails will be painted. Oldest wanted a "zombie ish" color. Still have a little more work to be ready for paint but its getting closer. Inside of the frame rails and the cross members will be undercoated.
Had a couple of the bumper brackets already cleaned up and primed so we had to see what the color was going to look like.
So I am in no way a professional welder, but managed to get some work done. Had to make a new "A" post piece where it was rusted out.
Drivers floor had to be pieced together but is all welded in. Since my welds aren't the greatest, I welded both sides just to be sure. Will all be covered in bed liner when done. Drilled holes in the support pieces to plug weld the floor to the supports.
Also had to patch in the side under the cowl and a small spot behind the door. Will have some body work to do as I found alot of body filler just under where it says Jeep. Should be able to take care of most of that fairly easily and only need minimal filler.
Passenger floor still needs to finish being welded in. Have a new "A" post made for it as well but its coming along.
Getting closer, now have both floors, both "A" posts and both rocker panels welded in. Still have some grinding and maybe a few places to touch up welds and the front of the tub will be completely made of solid metal instead of metal and rust spots. Need to weld up rear quarter panel patch and the rear body mount supports and I should be done welding.
Also managed to get the frame painted. Still have a couple areas to clean up then we will get the inside of the frame and cross members bed lined.
Next on the to do list is finish welding patches, bed line frame and flip tub over to prep for bed lining then build new wiring harness for the rear lights so we can get the tub back on and clear up some room in the garage.
Managed to get a little further this weekend. Had some help moving the tub back on the frame so I could tack the rear body to frame mounts where they belong. Took the tub back off and the oldest finished prepping the front half for bed lining. May need to remind him to watch for runs The firewall had already been bed lined so a little extra isn't going to hurt anything. Will add a second coat once this has cured. Taking a while trying to keep the garage warmed up. Next project will be to finish cleaning the rear half and bed line it.
Next on the short list will be:
finish the bed lining of the tub
finish bed lining inside frame rails
attach new wiring harness to frame
remount rear brake lines and take care of a leak
mount fuel tank and design a skid plate for the fuel tank
Then I think we can finally put the tub back on the frame and make some room in the garage again
So I made a list that had 26 things to finish before we can put the tub back on. We now have 8 left. Still working on bed lining the underside of the tub. Frame rails are now bed lined, new rear brake line is ran, extended breather hose for rear diff, bell crank re-installed, plugged holes on top of the t/c with oil pan drain plugs (didn't like the plastic plugs that were in there), fuel tank is re-mounted. Fuel line re-mounted although I don't like they used plastic line where it crosses over the shock mount and leads to the tank. Going to get new steel line and re-plumb that. Have a lead on a nice clean fuel tank but may be spring before I can get it so I didn't worry about cleaning this one up, had a bit of surface rust but nothing major may still buff some of it off. Ran new ground studs at the rear frame cross member for lighting needs, e-brake cables mounted, exhaust mounted until I can afford to have that re-done. Hope to lay out rear wiring harness tomorrow and have bed lining on the tub finished this weekend. Then hopefully................set the tub back on the frame. Nice to see parts going back on rather than coming off.

Thanks Rusty, really cant wait to get the tub back on. Got new fuel line installed today and all brake lines connected and wiring harness routed for rear lights. Only thing left to do is finish bed lining the tub and build a skid plate for the fuel tank, which could be done anytime and its ready to go back together!!!
Looks like the moons have aligned. The bed lining is complete. The tub should be set back on this weekend. Had to make new body mount washers as I could not find anyone that had them. Ended up using 1/4" steel flat stock and a 2" hole saw. Will end up with a bout a 1/2" body lift out of it since I plan to use a washer above and below the new poly mounts. Looking like the skid plate for the fuel tank will be done another day. Need to find someone that has a brake.
A lot of work to do this weekend, besides getting the tub bolted back down, my sister is bringing her JK over to instal new grade 8 bolts I think we have some work on my fathers Jeep, and I have a set of brawler rockers to install on our JK. Should be a regular Jeep party at my house, anyone that happens to drive by a house with a ton of Jeeps parked in front, stop in and grab a wrench (and possibly refreshments)
Its starting to look like a Jeep again.
Had to make a couple trips for bolts since someone measured the thickness of everything except for allowing for the nuts but we now have the tub back on. Still have a lot of body work to be done to prep for paint, but painting will have to wait to spring now.
The body mounts turned out pretty good, burned up a couple hole saws cutting 28 of those washers out but It also gives it just a touch of lift and I think it looks pretty good. Hard to get good pics with all of the black bed liner soaking up the light.

Still have lots to do. New axle to frame bumpers should be here end of the week, then need shocks and I think the chassis portion is complete. Need to finish bed lining the inside of the tub then work on building a wiring harness and this and that and......
Thanks for checking in Rusty. Unfortunately its been too cold to do much. I have a small heater but its not quite enough to warm the garage up. If mother nature will get rid of the below freezing days we might be able to get some work done. Did get the frame to axle bumpers in just need to warm up to get the bed liner done so we can get more things put together.
Looking at building a custom dash so I have been working on plans for that and to simplify some of the wiring so it doesn't look like a rats nest behind the dash. Will post up the design for that once I am happy with it.
Well its slowly coming along. Found some cardboard to fab up a template for the fuel tank skid plate. Now just need to buy a 2' x 3' piece of steel.
Also managed to get a piece of 1/8" aluminum for the new dash.
Looking into the Speedhut gauges with the GPS spedo so I don't have to worry about what gears or tire she has on her.
Have taken some of the cold days and designed a new wiring schematic that I think will clean up a lot of the rats nest it had. Will be running all Acc and Ign power with relays and fuse panels since she only had a couple glass fuses originally and this moves loads to fuse panels instead of running through the ignition switch. Ignition is going to be converted the GM HEI along with a 2 wire GM alternator (future plans)
Been somewhat warm so the oldest is almost done prepping the rest of the inside of the tub for bed lining. Hope to finish the be lining this weekend. Anyone know where to find latex/vinyl gloves that are 3 ft long? I swear every time the oldest starts putting on the bed liner he has it from his finger tips to his eye brows. Guess he's gotta learn somehow, but its fun giving him a hard time about getting more of it on him than the Jeep!

Need to run wiring for the reverse switch on the trans then the rest of the tub sheet metal can get installed.
Trying to decide what to use to seal the trans cover to the floor. Factory used a putty like substance. Originally thought sticky backed weather stripping but wondering if plumbers putty would be a better option. Thoughts???
Also got the axle to frame bumpers installed and found a couple other bolts that didn't get tightened underneath. Once bed liner is cured things can start going back together inside the tub
