I'm glad someone else has done this. I have looked at the linked thread more times than I would like to admit and chicken out every time. I really need to get some aux lights for the back (reverse, as well as, something in the cargo area), but wiring up switched that have a clean finish has been my hangup. Everyone like the spod, but I don't like the look of the added cluster, I want something more stock looking, or at least in a stock place. On my previous vehicle, I cut into the dash to add LEDs for mods and, while not awful, I hated cutting up the dash. I only wish I could find a switch that wasn't a rocker, that could be placed behind those panels and pushed to activate for a completely stock setup.
There are videos of a guy that made the blanks functional (push able) and was going to use a micro switch behind them. He started the project and no follow up videos were ever made to my knowledge. This option seemed more in tune with my skill level. I want to do another one for some aux reverse lights. The only thing I don't like is that the blanks are slightly curved so the switch doesn't sit 100% flush. I used a little black caulk to fill in the gap and am pretty happy with the result.
I would like to know what the original factory switch panel was intended for. Are there optional accessories that may use the factory switches? Does the dealer parts department sell these switches?
I am so annoyed that I'm just now seeing this old thread. This, the day after I put my pillar switch mount in. I just wish an aft market company would make something that goes here and keeps the factory functions that came with the jeep.
