FNG just took delivery of his Sport Unlimited!

Couldn't find a properly equipped 6-speed Rubicon within 400 miles and decided it was a bit over budget and wasted on a lightweight like me. My dealer (Dave Ellis Chrysler/Jeep, Canoga Park, CA) found a suitable Sport Unlimited in San Diego with a hard top and dealer added Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ 305/65s on 17" Pro Comp 8069s, which I'll eventually have powdercoated flat black.

Bitchen'!

Day 1 of ownership, we went up to Frazier park to introduce it to the mud and snow.

Nice addition to your already well stocked garage. Congrats.

BTW if you only have room for 2 in that garage, I'd be willing to store one of the other 2 for you. No problem! That's what friends are for.

Hmmmmm! Fweaky brings up a good point..... do you prefer to be called, "Eric", or, "Mr. The Bastard"?

J/K too!

Speaking of JK, CONGRATS on your new Vessel, Shipmate! Damn fine set of wheels they added on at the Dealer. Makes your rig look "TOUGH", with the wheels sticking out from under the flares.

WELCOME ABOARD WF!

Cheers!

Ahh.. A Chrome Orange to counter my Ardent Red! I highly recommend the Larini SE (above diffuser) exhaust and the EkoLogical HID kit as the stock headlights are right around fatal at night.

Nice new JK to go with it! Something has to haul the autocross tires, right?

I've already done the Larini SE (I have over 20K miles on it and think I've burned up most of the stuffing - it keeps getting better sounding!) and I've had the front clam modified to eliminate the license plate block. HIDs are a must as well, just haven't got a round tuit.

I used to autocross the E-type Jaguar, but I do time trials with the Elise at Willow Springs and a few other California road course tracks.

The only drawback to the Jeep is that it doesn't tow - But it literally does EVERYTHING else the Lotus won't - so my motoring life is pretty much complete. It was the Lotus that made me addicted to open top motoring, so that eliminated pickup based 4x4s from my shopping list. Plus I love it's elemental nature. It's as much of a purist vehicle as the Lotus is. My previous daily driver purchases have always been ho-hum experiences - the Jeep had me out of bed today like it was Christmas morning. Went 300 miles to nowhere and can't wait to get in it tomorrow. I think it's going to be a long love affair.

Cheers,
E

There are a few nice vehicles that warp the whole time/distance relationship. The Wrangler, the Lotus, virtually any Ferrari, etc. "Well, the store is 2.2 miles away. It's mid-70's and clear. The top's off. It took me 9 hours and 450 miles but I finally got home from the store!"

Thanks for the warm welcome from everybody. Fweaky and Blackbeard1718, you can call me Eric, but kindly refer to my wife as 'Mrs. Bastard'.

Adventure Myk, I believe you're my long lost doppelganger. I once took some friends out for Ice Cream. It took 23.5 hours. We stopped by the Grand Canyon on the way.

The Jeep is also going to keep me from racking up so many miles on the Lotus - I bet I get at LEAST 10 more years out of both, which is huge because I rarely keep a modern car for more than two years.

What's up Eric . . . Congrats on the Jeep! I'm over here in Chatsworth . . . actually grew up in Sylmar back in the day. Hit me up if you're ever looking to hit the trail and want some company!

When we were active in the vintage Jaguar community, we would often show up at events with her wearing a name tag that read "Mrs. Bastard". Everybody IMMEDIATELY knew exactly who she was!

Nice Unlimited; did they recalibrate the speedo/odo after the tire swap?
You'll want to regear now too...

I wanted an Elise but couldn't fit in it.
We bought 3 MINIs instead. We're down to just one now though.

Oh yeah, we have a Mini Cooper as well, not an 'S' though. Mrs. Bastard was a little miffed that I ordered it with a 6-speed, but she LOVES it now. Funny thing is, after getting out of the Lotus the Mini feels like a Minivan. And the wheelbase isn't much shorter than the Jeep (another reason I love the Jeep over the Dodge Ram I just traded).

As for the Speedo recalibration, I'm only 1.7% out of whack, so I'm not sure if I'm going to bother. I mentioned the speedo calibration to the dealer at purchase (who supplied the tires/wheels) and they were sort of 'Huh?' which I suppose is to be expected.

BTW, what tire size is that on your Sahara?

Nice lookin' Wrangler Eric. The tire/wheel combination make it look just right. I'm like you, can't wait to get out in the morning and drive it. Just wish we had some more snow so I can go play! Like the Lotus too, sweet ride! I used to road race an Elan many moons ago.

Cheers!

I have 285/75-16 Goodyear MTR/kevlars on the Jeep. BFGs on the MINI...

About recalibrating.
Federal law says that your speedo/odo can be optimistic by as much as 10% plus 2 mph but NEVER pessimistic at all. In other words, it can lie and say you have more miles on the vehicle and are going faster than you really are but never the opposite.
It's not something that would normally come up except when you sell the vehicle and you'd have to check the dreaded box that states that the odo is incorrect; you'd lose money on it.
Jeep can also completely void your warranty if your odo is determined to read shy of reality.
Recalibrating is a smart and easy thing to do.

I'll definitely take it up with the dealer. I like your tire size - aggressive, functional but they don't appear to stick out from the body too far, which is the only issue I have with the look of mine. I don't want to start fitting new fenders. I'd rather save my money for a bumper/winch set up.

305's are pretty fat ---- fat tires are great if you do alot of sand; otherwise they just suck the dollars from your wallet...

I'm really considering going even skinnier on my tires, to a 255/85-16. Better in mud (I'm in Georgia, after all), better on gas.

Thanks for the insight - I'm pretty new to this and not well versed on the technical idiosyncrasies of off-roading. Being out west and near the desert and beaches, I may have lucked into the right set-up.

I got stuck in the silt years ago in my Toyota Tundra. I was there for two hours before an old beater CJ came along, threw me a line and yanked me right out like it was nothing.
