JK hitch/tow hook

My 2009 JK has the tow hook. Can I add the stock hitch receiver without removing the tow hook or do they use the same mounting holes?

No you can't, sorry....gotta take off the hook to put the other on. (unless you move the hook to the side and re-drill new holes to recieve it. They use the same mounting holes.

Totally wrong. The tow hook on the 09 IS mounted on the left side near the license plate to allow installation of the hitch.

Now you understand the reason for my question. I figured you could have both, but after reading tons of posts on both this and another forum it wasn't clear. I thought perhaps, even though it was off to the side, there was a longer bar that attached in the center or something. Was this a change for 2009?

You could just put one of these on your hitch:

My misunderstanding, mine came with a hook in place of the hitch that looks just like the mounting bracket that the hitch comes with (I had to replace that with the hitch). 09's are different.......I assumed incorrect. "where's that engineer when you need him?"

Here's a video of an installation on an '07. Indicates it would be the same hitch on an '09

Always good to watch a "educational video" with the morning coffee. Thanks.

My jeep is one month old today, and got too many other things going on for now but getting a hitch is on the short list (Ya, that LONG short list) of upgrades, May change out the bumper, but less $$ just going with the hitch. Will see.

you dont need to touch the muffler to install the hitch.

I was kinda wondering that. Thanks. A lift is nice, though. SO much better than lying on your back

Interesting video. That's where ordered my hitch from, but I never noticed the video. It should arrive in 2 more days. I will be on my back and I hope to avoid loosening the muffler. It looked a little tough for a trained mechanic who had the vehicle on a lift.

daggo66, hey bud, you don't need to take the muffler off, you can angle the bolts in and then straighten them out after you pass the back part of the muffler......I've done this twice on my o7 and my friends 08.

Thanks for the info, that's great to know as I'll be attempting it on the JK down the road. Also as daggo66 pointed out, it looked to be difficult for the guy in the video to loosen the muffler.

The videos are pretty cool. Watched the one for my Cherokee, found a used hitch, so now going to give it a go

My hitch arrived today and it's already installed. I think it took longer to remove it from the box (about 14 heavy duty staples) than to install it. No problem getting it past the muffler.

I saw a JK with the center rear tow hook today. Now I understand why some say it has to be removed. I knew mine was on the side, but I was thinking that it must still bolt to the center somehow.
