Rusted Muffler....BRAND NEW

I jsut bought a 08 Wrangler with 45 miles on it. I have put about 700 miles on this car and my muffler is already a rusted mess.

What gives?

Will they replace this???

exhaust parts will show surface rust right away, its normal. it won't rot out for years.

Are you sure it's rust?

Today, I have 476 miles on my odometer and the tail pipe side has some discoloration from the heat. They can't stay looking like they came out of a box forever, figured mine is normal.

If yours is worse looking than this picture I'd suggest having the dealer look at it. Is there rust starting anywhere else underneath? If so, I'd be very inquisitive as to why? Too early in the year for salt on the roads.

Regards,
Richard

I have a 08 also and have a lot of surface rust on the muffler. I figured this is normal especially in the N.E. with all the rain and humidity.

Mine looks like hitchhiker's muffler and I have 4,000 on mine. It shouldnt be a 'rusted mess'. Eventually all muffler become discolored unless you get a stainless steel one.

This is very common on the JK's. They used the cheapest grade stainless allowable by law and most JK's will get very rusty very quickly. I've seen/talked to a few people that didn't have this problem, but more do than don't.

Best option if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a new exhaust, is to go buy BBQ black paint (high temp) and just paint it. It will blend in better, and won't show rust.

Some people have complained a lot to the dealer and they replaced it, but had to be approved by Chrysler first. I'd just paint it...or buy the Woods kit and get rid of it all together!
