spare tire carrier

I am looking for options to carry a 35" spare tire without having to spend $700 for a bumper/swing away carrier. I have started seeing stress cracks in a few of the spot welds inside the tail gate. Are there other options besides the Or Fab that requires alot cutting and drilling?
I would like to retain the stock bumper if I can.
Thanks,
Scott

So far, leading the pack is the Rugged Ridge XHD bumper with swing away add for about $770 shipped to Tyler, TX 75703. If anyone knows of a better system or deal; let me know...Thanks.

I'm partial to the AEV bumper/carrier. Tire carrier mounts to frame, strong as all hell! Also, opens with the rear tailgate without putting any weight on it whatsoever so there's nothing separate to open!

Oh...and pump kit to carry extra fluids (water, margaritas!) is a plus too.

weve carried a 35" spare on the stock carrier for almost three years now with no ill effects.

Yup...Gibson dual stainless...sounds pretty amazing, like I've got a hell of a lot more than the 3.8 in there!

I've been running 18" Rockstars with 325/65x18 BFG's with the spare adapter (up and out) for a few months with no damage to the rear gate yet. I just can't bring myself to spend the$$$$$ on a rear carrier either.

Try looking for the rancho one. I think it runs about $400. My girlfriend's aunt has one on her jk with a 35 and no problems with it.

carrier

Jetmech1,
That is exactly the same size tire we are running, except with MotoMetal wheels. Anyway, I notice some rattling and tappping sounds this week-end from the gate area. Pulled over and sure enough, some of the spot welds on the inside of the gate have cracked. I went home and took the 6,000 lb. tire assembly off of the stamped steel tailgate and it seems fine without the weight of the wheel/tire attached.
I will say this, whoever installed (dealer) the tire carrier extension DID NOT use the extensions for the snubbers...
None the less, I still think I am looking for a better system.

I believe right there is the issue - if they installed it - make them warranty it... as in replace the tailgate (then get you some new snubbers for < $20)

I saw one all chromed up at the dealer the other day - had 305 55 20 Trail Grapplers on some spunky chrome XD wheels (with all the other chromathings - for ~ $38k) - and dang if the snubbers on the tailgate weren't still the factory shorties...

Daystar makes them - Quadratec carries them...
