Tire carrier?

I need an oversized tire carrier. I would like to keep the 3rd brake light. Might be just temporary, so the cheaper the better. But I don't want to be going up a hill and my spare tire going down. Any suggestions?

Teraflex hinge and carrier is really popular thats what I run and have had no issue what so ever, if I were to do it again I would buy it again.

I have read some not so good reviews on these Breaking at the welds. I looked into them for a week then decided against it due to some of the folks that have them and had welds break on them I am going OrFab tire carrier Instead My lights and also brake light will be moved anyways and I didn't want a full bumper. Cost is roughly the same.

Googled it. I found one guy who had his break twice and a bunch of people saying "I told you so." I couldn't see his pictures because I'm not registered there. I did see a photo album on project-jk that had pics wartermarked with wayalife. The problem seems to have occurred in 2013 and seems isolated to that other site. That's why I didn't register to see the pictures. I wanted my carrier to not break. And in the pictures I saw on project-jk, the tire was set up to exacerbate the issue. The tire was obviously not flush against the hinge. You could see the dampener in a couple of the pictures. If you replace the stock tire with a heavier tire that can vibrate more then don't take the right steps to dampen the vibration, I'm not sure if you can really be surprised if the carrier fails because of metal fatigue do to excessive vibration. There are a lot of reviews on that site but all the ones I saw seem to reference on person's issues.

On a side note, some of the users over there seem arrogant and uninviting. They come across as a good ole boy site that isn't welcoming the new people looking to learn new stuff. I could be wrong but that's just the impression I got.

Is this the TF product y'all are referring to?

$500 for a tire carrier seems a bit excessive.

Surely other options are out there.

Yes?

$500 is just for the hinge. The entire setup is $730. (It can be found a little cheaper on other sites.) Yes, it is expensive. Yes, there are other options. When I started looking, I was looking for a bumper/carrier combo. All the ones I found acceptable were $1000 an up. I ended up going with the Teraflex carrier and hinge with a separate bumper and the total cost was close to the what I would have paid for a combo. Despite the new information about them having issues, I'm very comfortable with my setup. As I mentioned above, I could only find one person who had issues. And even by his own admission, he felt the spare tire jiggling before it broke, a clear indication that the tire was not mounted correctly. I have to question his claim that this is a Teraflex issue. The tire should sit up against the hinge to stop the vibrating, not sticking out using a dampener where the added vibration of the tire can cause excessive metal fatigue. But that's just my opinion on the issue.

I went with this one, not inexpensive but I don't want issues when off road.

Im in the same boat as THPerez, that one incident was the fist I had heard of anybody having an issue with it, plus on top of that it looks factory, is a light weight setup, and when compared to a bumper/carrier combo is very comparative price wise. I'm pretty sure there are folks on this forum running the Tflex carrier with a 37 and no issues. so im figuring my lil ol 35 will be just fine.

Seems as if the one you linked is the stand alone bumper with out the carrier. Looks like closer to 900 for the carrier/bumper combo.

On a side note I believe bestop has a good price on their bumper/tire carrier.

Bestop 42934-01 - HighRock 4x4™ Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier for 07-15 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited - Quadratec

As does Rancho.

Rancho RS6221B - Rancho® RockGEAR™ Rear Off Road Bumper with Tire Carrier for 07-15 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

Those are probably the two cheapest I am aware of.

I am not saying you will have issues a few Issues is enough for me not to want to purchase that Product. From what I gathered from the thread over there was that it was used on and off road.

on wayalife they do push EVO and any other products that cost good money. I am in no way bad mouthing EVO or the sites most seem to think they are Elitist on the jeep world. a so to say cookie cutter Jeep.

out of a 1000 tire carriers if 3 fail that's not a bad thing a lot can play into 3 failing. I just wanted to give my input on the OP not to make it feel like I am saying the product is terrible. I have teraflex on my jeep just not the tire carrier.

Ah...the $20 tire carrier...a ratchet strap to hold the tire down in the back. Given what you're looking for, that sounds like your best bet for now. I can't see you finding a good and cheap carrier for less than a couple hundred. That's a substantial chunk of the cost of what you want.

There are a few people who run around town with no spare, either on or in the Jeep. They only bring the spare on the trail. The reasoning is simple. How often do you use it? If you ever get in a situation where you do, you're in town and someone can bring it to you. They bring it on the trail because AAA doesn't respond to calls on trails.

I also have the Teraflex Tire Carrier. You can use the factory 3rd brake light if you wish, but I installed the AEV 3rb brake light. Much better look and less obstructed view out the back window.

There is no concern about weight on the hinges. The concern is weight on the tailgate. The stock tire carrier has all of the weight on the tailgate. The carrier isn't even attached to the hinges. The stock hinges can obviously hold the entire weight of the tailgate and wheel/tire with the door wide open. That's because the stock hinges go right into the frame of the Jeep. This makes the hinges very strong.

The entire Teraflex tire carrier is attached to the frame same place as the stock hinges. So, unlike the factory tire carrier, the weight of the spare tire in not on the tailgate, it's on the hinges.

I have sprung a few doors and automatically thought "I'll break that". I have a nasty habit of using doors as ladders. I will give the factory set up credit, it holds my spare and me both up better than I expected, but I didn't have it open, yet.
I like the TF design and it looks better/more like a factory job than many others. How could one that does not attach to the hinges help the tailgate any?

3rd Brake Light Relocation

Do any of y'all know if TeraFlex sells the 3rd Brake Light Relocation Bracket separately from the tire carrier? After upgrading to 35s I put a spacer on the stock tire carrier so that I could keep the stock tail light. Now my tire rattles a lot, so I'm looking to remove the spacer and move the 3rd brake light. Thanks

They do-$25-plate/third brake light bracket. Says you can mount either the plate or third brake light.

Just installed Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD tire carrier($179.95 out the door) for 315/75/r16 Duratrac + ProComp7069's. Just the carrier, not the hinges.

Installed in a breeze, and did not need to use the 3rd brake light extension wire that came with it. Mounted the 3rd brake light on the lowest mount point(there are several), and sits about 2mm above the tire. The next spot up obscured my rear view mirror too much, looked too high and awkward, and the stock cable reached fine as well. 37's+, you'll need that extension I imagine.

Terra flex tire carrier is well made....I saw several different brands at a local mod shop and the Terra Flex is well worth the bang for the buck. It was easy to install. I bought the third light extension seperately not aware it was available as a kit.
