Trailer hitch question

On my "Short List" (which is kinda long) of things to get is a trailer hitch. Not really planning on hauling anything, and my p.u. and van both have hitches anyhow, just like the flexibility. Here is the question part... What up with having to remove the rear tow hook if a hitch is installed? The hook seems well out of the way, but even the hitches sold by aftermarket vendors mention removing the hook. Anyone know about/dealt with this? Thanks folks.

The hitch and the hook both use the same mounting bolts- stupid design, na? At least it means that either one will be well-attached Go aftermarket on the hitch and you MAY be able to save the hook. If not, new bumper time Go D-rings Mark W.

Thanks Mark, and yes, bad design. I would have thought it was WAY out of the way.

why don't you just go w/ a hitch bumper. it is more practical if you off road. hitches sit below the bumper and get caught up on obstacles, the hitch bumpers don't. plus the hitch bumpers are rated at class II & III.

On my 09, Iv got the tow package and didnt lose the rear tow hook.
Tow package was factory install and the hitch is rated Class III.
The hitch is rated at 3500 max. Somehow, I cant see towing with it when the vehicle weighs almost as much as the max capacity.
MAybe Im missing something.

Interesting. I wonder if losing the tow hook is a 2dr thing only.

A new bumper may be in the distance future, with the jeep less than 2 months old I will keep it somewhat stock for now. Can only throw so much $$$ at it at one time, LOL!

My 08 got the hooks subtracted on the factory receiver install. I bought an additional hitch set up with a 90 degree twisted loop with pin that drops through the ball mount hole on the hitch. This makes the loop horizontal instead of vertical. Now I can securely tie a strap to it. The loop is pretty beefy looking. Receiver will prolly come off the back of the jeep before the loop breaks. I'll post a pic if anyone is interested in it. Got it at a farm supply shop.

Ok lets try that again. I tried cropping the originals since they were so big. So, this time I'm gonna try just posting the originals and see if the upload reduces them for me.

Ok so here is the pieces.

Much better! Now, is this something you get much use out of? Do you leave it attached so you can hit your shin once in a while? I know I would.

Right now I leave it under the back seat. I'll eventually put it in my off road kit. I did two rescues last summer in Boy Scout camp for my staff. This summer I'm managing a much larger camp and more out in the boonies. This thing will probably come in more handy this summer. Now I can yank from both ends!
