Pictures of 2002 Jeep TJ Fender Flare Mods

Here's the pics of my 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ. My flares were gray, so I removed them to paint, and ultimately took a dremel tool with an HD cutoff wheel and trimmed them down for more clearance before I painted them with Krylon plastic paint... Tell me what you think!

Nice job. That's one of the free mods I have planned for this spring.

BTW - fill out you Jeep Profile when you get a chance. You have a very cool looking rig there. Love the color too.

Thanks guys! I tried to score them and pop them with a razor knife, but they are too baked by the sun, so I broke out the trusty ole Dremel tool! I am seriously considering buying the RR 7" stock flares and trimming them down like this in the future to actually give me the proper coverage for those 33 x 12.50's.

I measured it all along the length of the fender, and then made a template out of cardboard. I drew a thick guideline with a black marker, and trimmed on the inside edge of the line.

Once cut, I had to sand the edges down from 60 grit to about 800 grit for painting. It looks good though. That Krylon plastic paint is good stuff.

Can you post a close up of the fenders and tell me more about the Krylon. I need to do that.

Thanks guys!

I bought the Krylon spray paint at Walmart, and I think it is marketed as "Fusion"; it is designed for plastics. I cut them, sanded them from low grit to high grit, or rough to smooth, then sprayed them per the directions. No need for a primer. Looks 100% better than the gray faded flares.

Hey there Rogue, CSEoffroad.com has the RR 7" flares for $160 and free shipping. I did a fair amount of research and they had the best price I could find. I just got mine installed and was thinking of cutting them. Post some pics when you do it OK

That's sweet I was thinking of new flares but after seeing this I think a new cutoff wheel is in my future
depends on weather or not I can get the flares off without breaking the studs off.

LOL. The Jeep has been clean three times since I have owned it.
1-Right after I bought it.
2-For the pictures in this thread.
3-Recently, when my co-workers complained after I sank it in a mudhole on the local WMA...

LOL.

Wolfen,
Mine came off fairly easily, even though they were caked on and the fasteners were a bit rusty.

03 Rubi,
I am going to check that out. I wonder if the RR 7" flares are dense enough to trim down like this without sagging? Anyone tried it? I just might have to be the first!

I saw a guy recently with a 2009 Jeep who cut the factory flares like this, and it looked like he had a set of $500 tube flares on there! It looked GOOD!

I think most guys are using Satin black for the flares with good results. I took their advice and mine turned out great.

Just look at stock flares and compare to the pics. Pretty easy to see what was trimmed.
