Rubber bungee to the spare wheel. Hi-tech, low cost, does not move, easy access, only while offroading. No need to display a shovel in town.

When I install my 12v compressor under my hood, it will take up the space currently used by my shovel. I like the simplicity of TJDave's mount and will most likely copy it after I install my compressor .

Here's my solution:

Scrape, tape, paint...

Got rid the the rubber stops and installed two Quick Fist Clamps straight to the bumper through existing holes...

My axe rests perfectly on top, wedged behind the shovel and the bumper...

Despite considerable daily abuse I haven't managed to shake anything loose yet. I love having the axe handy too - I'm a park ranger and use it on downed trees all the time. The whole setup will have to move when (or if) I get a winch. This may not be the best solution but it is stable, strong and best of all it didn't break the bank

Easy and cheap (free). I used some nylon cord I had laying around and just tied them to the vents inside the tailgate.

That shovel is probably ok there but don't be tempted to ever install anything heavier on those support rods like a Hi-Lift jack. Doing so will start flexing the support rods which will break the spot welds that hold the nuts to the back of the firewall that the support rod bolts thread into. Once that happens you will start hearing a maddening cracking/clicking sound from the broken spot welds flexing on the inside of the firewall. Ask me how I know that.

Uh oh, my shovel will be disappearing after awhile and will later be replaced with...

A 12v PUMA compressor.

There will be struts on the left and right side for support (sorry for the side perspectives/view). Pic below is for the driver's side, still measuring for the passenger's side. Hopefully this will mitigate/support vertical stresses. Will also measure for horizontal movement as well.

Just make sure that it's well supported, you don't want the weight of the compressor to bounce and cause those support rods to start flexing.
