I know this has been asked to death and back 10 times, but do you guys have power issues? It just seems like you would off road in mud or the like.

Btw, you have pretty close to my dream jeep^

I don't off road. I barely have to get on it most of the time. On the highway it's a different story.

I have never needed nor wanted more power off-road. Only wished I had a tiny bit more on the highway with four people, luggage and steep hills.

This. The 4 cylinder with low gearing is PLENTY of power to get through even the worst of obstacles.

A lot of guys bag on it saying it's not great on the highway. Even with 3 other big people in mine, we manage to scoot doing about 65-70 uphill, and 75 downhill. Sure it's a beast to accelerate, but it gets up and goes. Definitely would not mind having 10-15 more HP. I think I might eventually try to convert to multi-port injection and then maybe see if there is a CA SMOG legal exhaust to help it breathe better. Also ditching the mechanical fan for an E-fan.

With just me, it scoots a bit better. I've only gotten mine up to about 85, wide open going downhill. It's all she had. And good thing too. You don't want to go 88 in a Jeep

I usually keep it about 65 on the hwy. Last weekend, I drove about 90 miles @ 65 mph, then 30 miles at 20-35 mph on a dirt road, 10 miles @ 55 mph. I also stopped and turned engine off 10 times on the dirt road to read about the geology. Filled the tank when I got back and calculated 22.7 mpg for the tank. My average is 19.2 since I bought it.

Alright, thanks guys. I'm going to be buying my first jeep here soon and 4 bangers are slightly cheaper than a 6cyl (I'm a poor HS kid). Has anyone else heard that snorkels provide a little power boost?

Here is my 92. Bought it a couple months ago, have always wanted one. Been having some troubles with it ever since. This forum has been pretty helpful with figuring things out.

93 yj no lift, all i've done so far was some aluminum 1" adapters and my stock bronco rims....i do say it came out nice, have to get some more pics, got one with the full doors on, and one with the half doors on to show ya second pic was before i cleaned up the tires....they were in the back of my bronco as spares(i've got some nice 31" superswampers under it...that will migrate to the jeep soon enough)

That is incredible mileage! Have you modified your intake/exhaust? Or anything for that matter? My 95 Rio Grande with only 40k miles averages 14 with mixed highway and dirt roads. And I've never seen anyone claim over 18. What is your trick?

No problems at all! Ok, it isn't speedy but with 33s and 4.88s I can drive faster on the highway (70mph) than I want to.

Off road, shoot, how much power do you need? The 4 is fine.

I get 19 mpg in town with my 95' with 180k miles. 32" tires too.

Never had it on the highway over 55 so I have no data there.

No modifications in exhaust or intake. I usually get better mileage in any vehicle I drive. I think it's just that I shift very smoothly, accelerate smoothly and slow down if I'm trying to fight the wind.

Here's our '94. Just "finished" a couple weeks ago...Ok never done, but on the road and enjoying the hell out of it. 129K on the drive train bone stock. 1" body lift 31 BFG's on wheels that are scheduled for painting when we stop driving long enough. Around town or in 4-low more than enough power. Highway...well we don't need the high speed lane or the 5th gear if there is a grade involved but the daughters have found the beach with no trouble 1/2 hour away several times!

Check out the build below.

If ur looking to add hp to a 4 banger a snorkel wouldn't be at the top of my list. I would get the July edition of JP magazine. It has great ideas for hp gains in a 4 cylinder. My opinion is use the money u would spend on the snorkel and use it for one of the mods in the JP magazine. Just my 2 cents though..

95' YJ with 2.5 l, 2 1/5" RC lift, 31x10 50's, custom high lift mount and more. Took the children to the Sierras for a few days. "Four is Fine in Four X Four". Towed a 4x8 trailer with gear for 4 days from sea level to 6500'. It was a little slow at times but I was in no hurry.

Here is mine right now. Its how I bought it. Has 31"s right now but they are road tires.. Want to get some all terrain 33s after I lift it. Thinking a 2.5" Suspension and 1"-1.5" inch Body.

Running with no doors is the best.

I will add a picture of the filthy engine tomorrow.

1995 wrangler that I use for plowing in the winter...it never comes out in the summer[IMG][/IMG]

1993 red wrangler plow jeep, next to my CJ5... it comes out sometimes in the summer[IMG][/IMG]
And here is my 1995 Rio Grande that I bought as salvage and rebuilt. This NEVER comes out in the winter...not a single spot of rust[IMG][/IMG]

These are my 3 YJ 4 bangers. My wife has a 97 TJ 4 banger, and of course, the V8 CJ5. Garage is full...lol...
