Look at this

Just when you think your Jeep is modified enough, your friend sends you a picture from Florida of this thing!

If I was in snow country, these would be at the top of my mod list. American Track Truck - Car Truck & SUV Rubber Track System

Probably not. Intended for snow, marsh and other areas where low ground pressure is required. Rocks would probably tear up the frames and idlers. Not to mention tearing the rubber tracks. This would be a seasonal mod. On in the winter, off in the spring.

That would be one heck of a commitment to remove all that and then replace them with tires. I know that they're not too hard to install, but they would still take up a lot of extra space!

They actually work very well, but as Airslot mentioned, you don't want to run them on solid surfaces.
Had a bombi for years, the tracks do make it a real go-anywhere vehicle. With the tracks I had the load on the ground was less than a half pound per square inch, could drive through mud you sink to your knees walking on.
Like this, but with wider tracks and V6:

If I'm not mistaken, the idlers and tracks are just basic snow mobile parts. Really creative and innovative way to use off the shelf parts to make a super cool product.

Think you're right on the snowmobile parts.
Would not be too hard to build a set if you had access to some trashed out snowmobiles.
The only thing I don't like about a lot of the tracks for sale is that they are 'flat' with no angle on the front so they don't work as well when there are obstructions like a fallen tree or similar. Makes it so you are pretty much limited to clear trails, with an angle in the front like my bombi had, it would climb over pretty much anything.

There used to be a courier (ford mini truck before ranger) near Chicago drive and wilson that had half tracks in the rear. Never saw it move so don't know if it was functional or just a parking lot ornament.

I could see that in Minnesota or the Dakotas, but not in Florida.
