Need help with understanding lift kits

As i have been doing research about lifting my jeep i have come to learn there comes a lot more to it that just the lift kit. You possibly have to change your gearing, change drive shaft, dropped pitman arm, extended flexable brake hoses and so on and so forth. My question is at what size lift or tires does it require you to add all these extra mods because if i can avoid adding more i will since i will only be going off roading with my jeep every so often and am really just interested in lifting it for height and looks.

As a general rule, stick with a 2.5" or less and you won't need to add extended brake lines, etc. You can still fit up to a 33" tire with a 2.5" lift, but I would go with a 31 or 32 inch tire. I recommend a suspension lift to do it right.

I honestly was thinking of getting a 3" lift and eventually some 32"s. what kind of mods are going to be required for this?

I personally bought my yj with a 3 inch body lift and fit 33's but I do not recommend it at all!! My lift is punching through the body and am in the process of repairing the stupidity! If you would like to get 32's I recommend the 2.5" lift with a max of 1" body lift and you will fit 32's as long as you get some rims with backspacing on them so you do not rub.

What mijeeper suggested if you go with a 3" lift. You should be good to go without having to do heavy modifications. I recommend going to Quadratec's site and looking there. You can learn a lot there and they have a forum and a place showcasing readers' YJs.

When I originally lifted mine about 10 years ago I got a 3" Rough Country lift that came with the cross member drop, dropped pitman arm, and brake line relocation brackets. I added 2" lift shackles, which add 1" of lift. The shackles made the shocks too short so I replaced them soon after. So...the moral of the story, a good 4" kit will have everything you need to be road worthy. Many will tell you that you MUST have a SYE and CV drive shaft with 4" of lift, but that is not always true. There are tons of guys out there running 4" with stock shafts. I had a little drive shaft vibration under hard acceleration, but in 10+ years never had to replace a universal.
