Photos of a Neighbors' Willys

Here's some pictures I took today, of one of 4 or 5 of my next door neighbors' Jeeps.

I don't remember what year this particular one is, (I think "the fifties" but don't know which year), but I'm sure some of you resident experts can figure it out.

Enjoy!

jpdocdave: I think he told me it is the origional motor, but I don't know what parts he may have replaced or upgraded, at first glance.

RebelBullDawg325: yes it has a rear "PTO" but I'm not sure of the reason. Obviously it was capable of running a belted external item from it. It would appear that the PTO was/is connected directly to the drive shaft.

I was amazed at the number of shifting levers. One is obviously for the PTO and I presume that two of them are for "High Range" and "Low Range" (individually), plus the gear shift itself.

I wondered about the silver-ball controller on the individual windshield wiper motors. Individual "on/off" controls?

I asked about availability of "road worthy" WWII Willys and he said they're "out there" but the price wasn't too steep. "Around $5,000.00" he stated.

yup thats not a flat head they stopped those in the late 40's thats the F-head, ran from 49-61 i believe (or somewhere there abouts), that looks like it is an early 50's from where the battery is from the clear turn signals, but that coulda been something swapped in easily

and u got the shifters right there's the tranny then twin for the t case than the PTO (the one farther back is the pto), and the PTO woulda been for all sorts of farm implements as you said.

and if you find a highway worthy willy's for 5,000 let me know that's a steal, although for around town no faster than 40mph you could find one for 4,000-6,000

i take it that he doesn't drive it when its cold out from the heater being disconnected? :-P yeah im showing off my abilities now haha

Looks very much like a 60's era Willy's (flat hood was 50's, round hood was used in 60's I believe) I had a '65 and that is the exact same hood.

Manual trans, PTO in and out lever and High low range lever. Looks like he has part of the ditch digger attachment on the rear.

Definately an F-Head (134 cu/in) motor (not to be confused with a flat head or L-Head). Has the stock oil bath air cleaner (which I had on my TJ) and vacuum activated skull crusher windshield wipers.

Also has the omni-directional spare tire

Very Nice Early CJ5!

Still has the original bumper with the hole for the crank. That baby looks very original! Have the owner contact me and I will post some pics of it at my Willys website.

Old thread, but I'm just clearing the muddy waters a little. The Willys is a CJ3B. Production on them started in the early 50s and ended in the 60s. It is an F head, Hurricaine engine, 134 c.i. Someone posted that a highway worty one would be a steal at $5K. Sure it would since there's no such thing as a highway worthy Willys. Max comfortable speed is around 45mph without a warn or saturn overdrive, then you REALLY wouldn't want to go much faster than that. Originally, they had 9" drum brakes front and rear, manual steering and basically rode like crap. Good luck handling that on the highway. Don't get me wrong, I love me some flattys. I've spent a good bit of time working on my Dad's and I love it, but it'll never see any highway speeds, even in the great mechanical condition it's in.

My brother in law has one. BUt, his battery goes between the engine compartment and the windshield in a tiny gap. We wound up buying a marine battery it was the only thing small enough that would fit. i believe his year is a 48-52 range, it has a metal plate on the dash. but, i have not seen it in a few years, it is sitting on a deer lease.

I absolutly love them though! his sat in a yard for 4 years after his dad passed and when we went to start it up, it basicly turned right over.
