2012 Wrangler usb ipod issues HELP!

Okay, getting some input on the other thread, but hadn't seen this section when I started it and felt like at this point I should post my problem over here. Please forgive the double posting.

SET UP:
2 week old (literally) 2012 Wrangler Sahara with Connectivity + Media Center 130 RES

DEVICE/CONNECTION DESIRED:
I want to use the center console USB, wired connection to hook up my Classic 120gb iPod.

DEVICE SPECS:
iPod Classic 120GB
2008
Firmware Version 2.01PC

NOTE: my iPhone 4S has paired perfectly and flawlessly to the BT/Uconnect system and will stream audio without issue.

However, I don't use my iPhone for music, and would prefer to just leave an iPod connected in the center box.

I don't want to buy a separate flashdrive. The iPod is a glorified hard-drive and a database, and it's my preferred method of portable music. I understand that there are often compatibility issues with Apple products. I'm not a traditional Apple Kool-Aid drinking cheerleader. I'm a PC user. I just prefer the iPod for my music. I DJ with this iPod every week and it works flawlessly. And the Media 130 system SEEMS to be intended for usb/mp3 player connection. And I'd like it to work right. If it's a few resets, software updates and a couple other hurdles - that's fine. I'd rather keep at it to get it working rather than list alternative ways around it.

First day with the JEEP, I plugged my iPod classic 120 gb into the USB port and a jeep logo came up on the ipod and I think it tried to set up the device. But I had to disconnect prematurely. Came back and tried later and now upon connecting, the iPod screen shows a slightly different Jeep logo, reads only "connected. Ok to disconnect" and shows that it is charging.

But the controls on the ipod are frozen, nothing happens. Nothing plays. And the radio screen displays "UCI: Reading" mode for a long time, then displays "Device Empty" No audio plays, etc.

I suspected that I messed something up by yanking it early on the first hookup? But I've tried the hard iPod reset tip several couple times, with no luck.

Upon advice from elsewhere on this forum, I also made sure I was updated on all iTunes and software options, hard- restored the iPod, and re-synced the library.

Plugged back into the Jeep - same issue. Jeep logo. USC "Reading" , eventually - "Device Empty" Nada.

I place my issue into the arms of the community. I have absolutely zero confidence that anyone at the dealership could begin to understand or follow this.

Thanks for any help.

Hi RadioScooter:
- does the usb work with any other drives/ipods? I wonder if it's too old to be recognized?

Couple of alt options:
- use your phone for music via BT or USB
- use the 3.5mm aux cable to connect ipod to deck (cheapest, low quality snd though)
- maybe a Ipod Pac adapter? (never tried it, but might be better)
- cheap external hdd or flash (my suggestion, Hdd's are dirt cheap)

I used to be one of those Apple Lovers that you talked about and over the year's I'm drifting further and further away from their BS.

I personally use my android and BT the audio to my deck. Optionally, I carry a micro usb adapter in the jeep, which allows me to take the 32gb mSD out and plug directly into the usb slot. I'd prefer to lose a cheap usb key then an expensive ipod if my vehicle gets broken into.

will the iPhone play music from the cable? I know you mentioned that you don't use your phone for music but this may help with finding out if the Uconnect is still ok.

Well, this gets even more interesting. At some advice from elsewhere on the forum, I reset the radio to factory settings. I then tried the same way to hook up my iPod with the same results.

However, then I attempted to hook up:
  • My son's iPod nano (newest gen)
  • My wife's 30gb OLD "classic" (from way before they were called "classics")
  • My brother-in-law's 160 Classic (also older than mine)
These are all of varying vintages and capacities. Only the Nano has anything remotely like updated firmware. They ALL connected and played music fine. Albeit the one with the most data on it took the longest to "read" but it too eventually was fine. Mine spends the same amount of time attempting to be "read", the Jeep logo still comes up the same way, the ipod is charging and yet - it eventually fails. I left it hooked up for 30 minutes just in case it was due to the large amount of files I have on there.

I am laughing now (instead of crying) because this must mean there's a settings or disc error or some issue with MY iPod Classic. Going back to do a complete factory restore on the device, and uncheck some content, adding it in later a playlist at a time.

Nice, hopefully it's simply a corrupted playlist or music file. I had a similiar problem with my Alpine deck, where the system would simply refuse to play specific songs off my usb stick and hang (had to power off deck to restore). I ended up deleting, formatting and copying everything but those songs.

I didn't mention the complete restore of the Ipod because I thought that you mentioned already doing that in your other thread. I have seen where I would get the message about no files found and did the restore and then re synced it. This had worked for me on a few different iPods. Also it will take a longer time period for Uconnect to read depending on the age and the amount of content on the iPod.
Give us an update after the restore process.

Actually, I had done a complete restore already. There were a couple differences in this last one though (in case this helps anyone else still having issues)

1. When I hooked up this time, I got a PC message that had found a possible corrupt sector of file set on the iPod drive. The message offered a "Scan Disk to fix" option which I did. It was a quick fix that did not seem to need to go through the whole drive.

2. This time, I only loaded about a third of the song and podcast files.

As suggested, I'll now add back other files and see as we go.

Thanks again.

Personally I think everyone is steering you the wrong way on this issue. I have a 2012 Wrangler (130 RES). I have tried since day one to connect my ipodS to the car system and the only way it CONSISTENTLY works is plugging them in via the audio jack. (Not exactly what I paid for...)

First I tried a older ipod. Then bought brand new shuffle. Then I bought brand new nano with blue tooth. N-O-N-E of them have worked with the system as advertised.

Examples of my problems: system will not read ipod info; system restarts reading ipod when going over a bump; system says functions not supported; system says no device connected;... How do I know this is a Jeep problem and not my ipod? Because the newest ipod actually will work 1 of 10 tries -- with full functionality! At times even the bluetooth function works.

The problem is that the other 9 times its not worth the frustration and just easier to unplug the USB and use the audio jack (minus all the cool features). Almost seems as if a connecting wire is loose.

Anyone know where to find schematics/diagrams on the system's USB connection?

I rotate a 2nd, 4th and 6th gen (used otherwise as my watch) Nanos as well as 30 and 80 gig classics in my '12 130RES without issues other than the drive spin up delay. Still much quicker than a CD full of MP3s. I do not have "use as USB disk" checked as I've found problems with other vehicles.

I had sort of that same issue with mine only I am using an iPhone 5. I've been in Afghanistan for a few months, so I can't play around in my Jeep at the moment and my memory may be off a bit. I seem to remember that I could use BT or USB but not both at the same time. In other words, I had to turn off BT on my iPhone, then connect the USB cable to charge it and play music that way. If it connected via BT first, it seemed like the USB port would never "activate." Once my iPhone was charging, I could then reactivate BT but the music would still play via USB. Sometimes the display would get a little wonky in that it would display the name of the song playing when it first starts streaming music, but then never change even though the songs do. If someone called me, I could answer the phone via BT and once the call hung up, the music would resume. Just out of curiosity, have you tried disabling the BT on your phone and letting the iPod connect first via USB? I think the problem is there isn't a button to directly select BT or USB. If the unit senses both, it seems like it gets confused.

I had the same issues with my USB and it turned out that the wiring became frayed (or broken). The dealership replaced it. I cannot use my iPhone 5 with it but my daughter can use her Itouch to play from it. The dealership said that it isn't set up for the iPhones. Stupid but it's not. Best of luck
