'97-'99 radio/heeadunit swap with '00-'06 possible?

I've looked for about an hour and haven't been able to find anything that answers my question.

Will a stock headunit out of a 2000-2006 fit my 1998 TJ? I've looked at some pictures of the upgraded dash on the '00+ and looks like it will fit.
I don't like the looks of the aftermarket headunits. They just look cheap to me.

So, has been it been done before? Is it a direct swap or is some fabing required? Will the wiring be about the same? etc..

Thanks in advance guys

The yj has a single din and the tj had the larger 1.5 din unit. I may be wrong, havnt been in a yj in a long time.

So you're saying considering tj's have din and a half it should be able to swap over?

Not sure of your location... But I can hook you up with my old 03 factory head unit that I'm looking to unload. I'm in NW Pennsylvania.

I need to resurrect this thread if possible. I replaced the stock radio in my '04 and a good friend of mine has a '99 and needs it. will my 04 fit in her 99 and if so, what did you have to do to fit it in? Any parts? Faceplate, connectors and tips to install would be helpful.

The 99 and 04 are totally different. The mounting brackets and plugs are not compatable without major rewiring.

That was my fear and I appreciate the reply. Anyone else have a stock radio for a 99 that you want to get rid of? I have a friend in need of one and would love to help her out.
