Bad stereo reception

I just installed an aftermarket Sony head unit in my 2004 TJ. It sounds great but, I'm getting really poor radio reception. Has anyone else had this problem? It was plug and play so I did not have to hook up any wires. The antenna is plugged into the back of the radio and all the connections seem fine. I'm stumped.

Thanks

I had the same thing when I did mine...even let best buy do it as it was free same day service...sucked...took it back and they put in a new head unit and still crap..switched brands to better radio, got bigger discount and still shit. SO I took it apart and found the problem. There is a jumper antenna wire that splices right behind the glove box, and it was loose. Too easy once I got to looking at it. Took about an hour for me to find it...all in all not worth my time to let them do it. Never loose since...I have an 05 X.
Hope it works for you the same.

It all has to do with either your stereo's tuner or the antenna. You might want to try an antenna booster before you change out the antenna or the stereo.

thanks for the info guys. I'm going to change the antenna adapter cable and the "special" jeep antenna wire with an antenna extension cable and see if its the cable. If not I'll have to try and find that wire.

in my '99 i had the same problem, what i had to do is backtrack the antenna wire to the antenna, there should be another connection closer to the antenna. i would say to get rid of that head unit, when it comes to sony and car audio it is all crap no matter how much you spend.

My old Xplod had a crappy reception but hey thats sony and car audio mixed together.

As Juspimpin said above, there is a plug behind the glove box that comes undone. Simply lower the glove box and it should be right behind it.

all you have to do is pull the thing to the side and it should fall down so you can get acces to the wire

The plug is right behind the glove box and no you dont need to remove the glove box as shown in the pic.. the wire wrapped in foam is the one you need. I assume yours is disconnected.

yeah that plug is connected. I have to wait until monday when I'm off work to mess with it. At least my favorite station comes in and the cd player and mp3 player sound great.

I have an Alpine and I experience crappy reception once in a while. No matter what adjustments I make its still crappy. But oh well, I just listen to the Ipod and CD.

Well the problem is solved. I finally got an antenna extension cable today and removed the antenna adapter and factory plug. It took longer to program the stations than it did to install. I actually get more stations am and fm than I did with the factory head unit.

Thanks for the suggestions, advice, and/or help.

Ahhhh the ol supertunner Pioneer has great radio reception, My Alpine has a great tuner, I listened to it for a week before I installed my XM, don't have to worry about static after that one.
