Can I use a Marine VHF radio as a CB?

Hello folks,
I am a Marine sesimic guy so I know very little about comms on land. Can I use a Marine VHF radio to communicate or am I at a differentr frequency? Would I need a license?
Cheers,
Bern

You no longer need a license to use marine band radios but they are only supposed to be used for communications on navigable water. They operate in the vhf range slightly above the 2 meter ham band.
Cb's are in the 11 meter band from 26.965 to 27.405mhz so they aren't going to be able to work together.

From what I remember when I had my boat and my marine radio, it is against the law (per FCC) to use the radio when not on the water. There are base stations but you have to apply for the license for a base station. I have also read that using the radio while on the water and talking with another vessel on a different body of water is also illegal.

Now with that said....being illegal and getting caught is 2 completely different scenarios. Let alone if the FCC will spend time and money to track you down if you do.

I sold my boat in 2003 and have not kept up on any changes on the law so my post may be "all wet!".

Yeah, Woody is correct, and Skeeter is correct. a CB radio would not function, and it is illegal to use on on land without the proper certifications.

It you will be anywhere near the water, the USCG has recently been upholding the law more often regarding the use of marine radios, and it isn't actually that hard to triangulate your position.

Bottom line, you'd be much better off with a regular CB, they are cheap enough.

But that marine mast would look pretty hip if you mounted it on a Jeep... ...especially a twin set...
