if it is a burned cd the stock stereo can only play certain file types.

Sounds like a dirty or bad laser. Try one of the cleaning discs that are available and if that doesn't do it it may be time to replace. I picked up a Sony GT420IP with the ipod controller and with the stereo, mounting kit, antenna adapter, and wiring harness it was like $150 installed. Not very high end but works well for my purposes.

OK, well judging from my days working at the Jeep Garage, and the fact that tiny's is doing the same thing... Chrysler radios are junk at best and when you take it in for repair, they send it off to have it repaired or send out a rebuilt one. I would say it's time for an upgrade. But nothing that would attract a thief. The radio in my YJ works just fine and I'm pretty sure it came from one of those grabber machines out in front of the Wal-Mart.

OK man, since this thread is going to maybe be turning to the "Aftermarket" side of the house... I'm gonna move it to the "Communications and Electronics" Forum so it gets a wider range of viewers.

Laser is probably dirty. Jeeps are notorious for them. I worked as a installer for a while. We used to see them all the time

stock cd players are junk, mine was doing the same thing before i finally got tired of it and ripped it out. Get an aftermarket cd player and never look back. Better yet, get an aftermarket cd player that reads music out of a usb hard drive or the little usb drives and be done w/ cds for good.

I am not going for a ridiculous audio setup with a bunch of amps, just something to give me control of my ipod and more options than stock. Besides, since it is in my LJ it is probably not going to last more than a year anyway before it gets wiped out by mud or water. I would much rather lose a $100 cheapie unit to that kind of abuse before losing a $2000 screen/DVD/Nav unit.

i think what he was refering to is getting something else cheap Sony is junk in the car audio department. Junk from the little nuts that hold their junk together to the entire cd player assembly.
I would highly suggest you look into pioneer. I've heard their cheap units and i gotta say their old deh3900ib unit that is like 80 bucks sounded better than my old $250 bucks sony xplod.

I have a player in my truck. I might just swap that out then. No sure yet, all I ned it for is music. I could care less about subs and an amp. They would get too dirty plus I am not "gangsta".

Blasphemy naysayer. For every one of you I laugh. Been running Sony products for years with no issues. Great support if you ever need it as well.

Great support if you ever need it as well. | for the price of a sony headunit you can get better unit from another company, like alpine, pioneer, clarion.... lets put it this way. lets say you spend $100 on a sony head unit. for $25 you pay for the letter "S", for another $25 you are paying for the letter "O", for another $15 you pat for the letter "N", and same with the "Y". what about the other $25 left? that is what the unit it self is worth. Don't get me wrong, sony has some great stuff out there but their car audio is all over priced low sound quality under powered crap.

One wants it as loud as possible so the neighborhood hookers can hear him coming from a mile away, while the other one just likes a good quality music (like me).
Whiteyj as far as the sony goes, i thought the same thing until i heard my current cd player.
