cig lighter / satellite radio help!

Ok so i got a satellite radio from a friend. I think it has everything but i'm not sure.

Well my cig lighter doesnt work. Idk why. So should i cut off that cig lighter adapter and run the wires from that to my remote wire off the stereo to make my satellite radio turn on when the ignition is on? Or is that a bad idea.

Or what could be making my cig lighter not work. I looked at fuses but it looks like there isnt one marked for the cig lighter.

check your fuses, i wouldn't suggest cutting and using a remote wire or anything like that.

Cutting the adapter off is a bad idea, read the input-output values on the adapter, mine cuts the voltage from 12 to 5 volts. Have you checked the fuse box under the hood? Good luck

Look behind the glove box. there should be 2 capped power sources- both labeled. One is a switched power source (turns off with the ignition) and the other not switched (stays on all the time.) I stumbled across them when I was hardwiring my Valentine radar detector. Use the switched line so your Sat Radio turns off with the car. Do not use the remote wire from the stereo- that is only meant to send a very low voltage signal to an amplifier to tell it to turn on and off, not to run a separate accessory full-time.

I bought a cig, lighter socket at a parts store and hard wired it to turn on and off with the key, and hid all the wiring under the dash. Hope this helps.

603TJ-- Thanks for the info. Ill do it that way if i decide to cut off the adapter.

Barrie-- How much did that cost you and which auto parts store did you try? I think that will be the way to go. I can use 603tj's advice to wire up the socket and then can keep my socket for the radio.

i actually found a 12 volt plug in for $5. Now i cant figure out which switched power sources your talking about. All ive found were relays and they arent labeled. My dad has my volt meter so i cant test anything. I'll keep looking around though for the mean time.

does your satellite radio have just 3 things that plug into it? like 1 antennae, the 12v plug in, and then some antannae thing with a suction cup on it. Because thats all the kid gave me and i want to make sure i have everything.

ok scratch that everything works now but im having problems with the signal. Barrie where did you mount the magnet and where did you mount the suction cup thing? I got my radio for installing subs cause i actually know what im doing when it comes to that but im clueless when it comes to satellite radios. ( no instructions came with it either.)

I have a soft top so I had to mount the magnet antenna that picks up the sat, signal on my windshield frame. the other one mounts as close to your radio antenna as possible. They don't work very well and I went to Radio Shack and bought a splicer gaget tha allows you to use your antenna lead in to get the sat, signal to your radio. If you have any more problems pm me and I will give you my phone#, Not good at putting into words what to do.

The satellite radio is NOT 12 volt. Do not connect 12 volt directly to the radio or you will blow it. The lighter adapter converts from 12 volt to 5 or 6 depending on actual radio.

I ran my receiver and mounted it up by the roof (where the strap goes when the safari top is on) and I put the magnet on the hood. Since my Jeep is black, the magnet looks like it belongs there.

yes i did. Went to radioshack, plugged in the adapter i bought and its now crystal clear. Thanks for all the help.

And on the 12 v plug in i bought, its wired to my fuse box and i plug my adapter into the 12v. plug in so that adapter is still being used to clear up any confusion.

And i got my antennae on the cowl. and my reciever on my windshield-- i just hope no one decides to try and steal it.

i'm a little late to the show but anyhow.. you can use the 12 volt ACC wire that goes to the stereo to power it too.
