COBRA transmit/receive issues

I have a Cobra 29 that every time I keyed the mic the ANT light would come on. Since I have not owned the jeep long, I took the whip antenna bolt out and cleaned the antenna connections with a wire brush. The antenna light does not come on now but I cannot pick up any local traffic on any channel but I can pick up skip on a few channels. There is got to be someone talking on the radio in the last 3 weeks besides skip. I am wondering if my radio has an issue.

Anyone out there offer a solution?

Such problems are normally caused by the antenna mount, usually put together incorrectly or a broken/mispositioned nylon insulating shoulder washer which shorts the antenna to the grounded mounting bracket.

A couple good close-up & well lit photos taken from the top and bottom of the mount may be helpful.

Tied of screwing with the antenna. The way the antenna is mounted on the side of rear fender, the only way to take off the whole thing is to take the fender flairs off and then the fender well. I seen in another thread here, where this guy made a bracket that bolted on behind the left tail light. I fabricated and installed one today. Now all I got to do is buy a new antenna.
