DIY Bandpass Subwoofer Enclosure

Hello.

Last weekend I made a bandpass subwoofer enclosure that fits behind the rear seat.

I'm so happy with it.

It's so much louder and deeper than all bassreflex housings I had before.

If you want I could post some pics tomorrow.

Looks good! I may have to fab something up when I get the chance. What did you use to calculate port length/ diameter?

go to caraudio.com's forum and there is a link for a calculator to determine the size of the enclosure, also can tell you what a ported box it tuned at(helps when building a box that needs to be tuned to a desired FQ) if you know what your sub displacement is it will help to make sure the final size is what you want(most manufacturers list them in the specs of the sub)

they also have free plans on enclosure's.

I used the programme "WinlSD".
Its free.

You need the TSP parameters to calculate the right box and port size.
All subwoofer chassis are different and need a different box.

I have two different Ports that i can change.
One for deeper bass and one for a kicking bass.
The longer the port the deeper the subwoofer.

I use it from 25-100 Hz.

I only have a 300w RMS amp.
But its that loud...
With the top on the Jeep more than 75% hurts my ears.

I meant what is the frequency band for each of the ports?

The enclosure has only one 3" diameter ports.

I have two pipes that can be changed.
With the 5.5" long pipe (40 hz) in the enclosure it makes deep bass.
With the 4" pipe (60 Hz) it isn't as deep but its a real good kicking sound for house and techno.

After some refresher, I'm thinking more along the lines of a fifth order bandpass with an upper and lower crossover point...Not sure if this enclosure style applies there..

Are you talking about a 6th Order BP with ports in both parts of the box?

That kind of box is hard to calculate and build.

Only 0.5-1 liters more or less (volume) or 1/4" more or less (ports) than calculated and ist will sound bad.

Afaik these 6th order BPs are only used for SPL competitions.

They're very loud but dont sound very good.

Perhaps you misunderstand me.

My sub box plays the whole range from 30-100 Hz. With the different Port lengths I only change the frequency where the box had its peak.

Right on. I was thinking that BP boxes have really steep rolloff curves at their upper and lower tuning frequencies (the 30 and 100 that you mentioned) and the tuning "band" "passes" without rolloff...hence the name bandpass..

As long as you're happy with it, that's what matters most!! I'll stick with tuned ported

Depending on the volume of the front and rear box in the BP enclosure it will be like a normal ported sub and with the port length you can choose the frequency where the peak (+6-9 dB) is.
