"Door Ajar", Alarm Sounding, Auto Locking???

I tried to search the forums but didn't find one on point so I hope I'm not duplicating.

We have an '11 JKU with only 2,500 miles on it. While driving yesterday to get it buffed (to fix scratches from branches), my "door ajar" indicator came on. I figured I must have just not closed one of the doors tightly.

Later, when driving home, it came on again and would not go off, no matter how many times I slammed the doors and gate. Lights stayed on so it was a pain but then it went off.

Then, it sporadically came back on and went off again.

When I got home, I locked the Jeep and my alarm started sounding (I think because it thought that a door had opened).

Finally, I dimmed the overhead to where it's off so I don't wear down battery but noticed that when I close the doors, they are automatically locking.

Anybody seen this? Assume I should just call dealer to have it looked at. Wasn't sure if this is a common occurrence in Jeeps/JKs.

Thanks for your help!

Dave

Same thing happening to me

I have a 2011 Sahara Edition 2dr and I'm having the exact same issue. I took it to the dealership once already and they replaced something but its happening again. I can't lock the doors because the alarm will randomly go off. Something is definitely off.... I have to take it back to the dealership again tomorrow. Will let you know what they find.

You're not going to like this answer...I didn't

Referring back to my earlier post I did take it into the dealership and they replaced the handle assembly. It seemed to fix it for a week or so then the problem started again so I checked it myself. I removed the connection between the door and the dash. The inside of the connector was all corroded. I took the vehicle back to the dealership and they confirmed this was the issue. I live in a snowy/cold climate and this morning I took the connection apart again (i had it reconnected and just dealt with the beeping) and there was ice all over the inside of the connector. Maybe theres a leak somewhere? Its a 2011! The really bad part...the part needed to replace it is on backorder for 3 months!!! I'm moving to a bigger city in two weeks and can't lock my doors without disconnecting the entire door (no auto lock or window control). I'm contacting Jeep directly because I'm incredibly bothered by this.

Door Ajar

Had the same problem, 2011 Wrangler. Was at dealers today, they replaced the left door handle. Stopped on the way home and locked the door, alarm started sounding within 5 minutes. Came out and the same (driver's door ajar) indicator on. Going back to the dealer tomorrow. Not happy!

I started having the same issues with my 2012 4 dr Sahara yesterday. Door Ajar, locking behind me, alarm going off "even when it was not set" dome light.

I have searched a bunch of threads on other sights and it seems to me there are a lot of others having the same problem. Had to disconnect the battery early this morning, neighbors pissed off that they woke at 2 o clock am....and needless to say I am less than a happy camper....I have only had the vehicle for 3 weeks.

My first time buying a chrysler product......lets see how it plays out

Still not fixed

Second visit to the dealer, said they checked the connections and updated the firmware. Went a day and a half and then alarm activated at 2:30 am. Sure enough, door ajar activated it again. It's at the dealer as I write this. It appears they have no clue as to what is causing it. Will post the cause...if they can find it.

3rd Time

Just brought Jeep home from the dealer, door ajar indicator didn't come on during ride home! Have the alarm set, we'll see if it activates. The repair order says the tech repaired the door pin connector door harness. The service writer told me that they had to re-solder some connections. They said there is definitely a problem and they are contacting Chrysler. We'll see what happens.

Well that is good news so far Piper, mine is still at the dealer, they said they had to wait for a part for the door lock...so it's in for another night and the wait continues.I will mention to my service people what was found on your end. They told me they could not duplicate what was happening so I feel they are just doing this to appease me.

Good Luck

Hey Blondie, I won't feel comfortable until it goes a couple of weeks without the problem. Hopefully that was it. Good luck with your Jeep. Really is frustrating when you have a new vehicle and they can't fix a recurring problem.

My two shillings

Sounds to me like there is a water leak somewhere in one of the doors, or at least a place where water can collect around a connection, causing a corrosion of said connection. The rub is without correcting the cause, replacing the effect is deferring failure of a part/component.

Sounds like a beast; I too am glad I've got all hand power. Of course, my door locks don't work...

FWIW - The alarm on almost all modern cars/jeeps is passively engaged whenever the ignition is off and the doors are closed & locked. Anything except a key/keyless TX unlocking them (like somebody reaching through a window) will trigger the alarm (usually while your neighbors sleep). You don't have to engage it, it's just "on". When you hit the "chirp chirp" button it is actively engaged, a more aggressive mode of alarm.

My 240SX does the same thing, but it's a '95.

Contact Chrysler

So far mine is still good. Go to the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center. They opened a file on my complaint and still have it open. They ask for the servicing dealer information and follow up with them. The more complaints they receive on this issue the better. The first thing the dealer did on mine was replace the door handle. It did nothing.

My dealer is Nielson Jeep in East Hanover, NJ. Try suggesting that your dealer contact them to see if the repair they did on my Jeep will work for you. The service advisor did say they were going to contact Chrysler about the problem they found. Again, good luck.

So here's the deal...it's not the lock and it's not the actual door causing the issue. The source of the problem is the wiring harness that connects the door to the dash. Disconnect the doors electrical as though you were going to remove the door. Look at the connector inside and I promise youll see corrossion. I had this exact same issue, took it to the dealer several times (see above) and finally diagnosed it myself after figuring this out. Chrysler confirmed, sent the part to the dealer and problem is gone. The reason the dealers are messing with the doors locking mechanism has something to do with the approved diagnostics protocol for this issue. Very frustrating issue but this is what you're likely dealing with.

I saw your previous post and that was the first thing I looked at. My connection was dry, clean and shiny. I'm not sure exactly what they did with my harness, but it appears that whatever it was took care of the problem,

This should be a quick fix.a switch was replaced in mine that was causing it to read that the door was ajar.I recall closing my door a couple times and the metal piece of the seat belt was in the way ...I thought that may have been the cause.good luck with it... You just bought a 2013 ?congrats ...we 2012 ers are having big prblems with the driver side heads...mine has been replaced along with countless others here on this site due to premature wearing on valve guides......keep your ears open for an unusual ticking noise that has no reason to come from a brand new engine.

Thanks for the post. Got a 2012 and got the 2 issues your taking about blondiemachine. I have this door ajar problem and when I disconnected the connector for the door wire harness (alarm was annoying) found the connector full of corrosion. Also the seat belt was in the way a couple time wyll closing the door. So I'm wondering should the dealer look at the connection or the switch your talking about? I also have that ticking sound you talk about. Going to the dealer very soon. Is this an issue they already have a fix for?
First Jeep for me and still love her in the snow. Any other things I should know?

Thanks

Same issue on my 2012. Doors lock randomly, door open light randomly on and off. Even the radio was randomly restarting. Not sure if that's related. Been to the dealer several times to address all these things. Only 400 miles left in my warranty!!!

Just don't wait 401 miles to get it fixed. I would even ask them for a warranty extension for this issue that continues to reoccur under warranty and has not been successfully repaired. If everything isn't fixed the next time I would call Chrysler about a warranty extension for this issue, if your dealership isn't accommodating, and keep a record of the date and time of all discussions, and a log of what was said. Your cell phone has a record log, and you could take a picture of it. Don't get left "carrying the bag".

You could also try the State Bureau of Automotive Repair. I would keep all receipts of the repair attempts, because this seems like grounds for legal remedies. There is also the Lemon Law. I know a guy who got all his money back on a vehicle that continually had problems under warranty.
