I love my Droid X, once you get used to using the sype keyboard you won't ever see the need in having a slide out keyboard. The screen is also larger but the phone itself is actually lighter than the original Droid (not sure if they made the Droid 2 any lighter than the original or not.)
You should ask this on a specialized forum :P but now that you asked here...
First, i don't own any of them but what i can say ... it depends what you do with it
Biggest difference is the keyboard.
If you send a lot of emails or SMSs, droid 2 has a hardware keyboard which is a big advantage.
Second biggest difference is the display.
4.3" on droid X compared with 3.7" on droid 2.
So, Droid X is better for watching movies, web navigation, etc.
Thing is, even if the battery is 1540 mAh compared with the 1400 in droid 2 it will probably last less because of the bigger screen.
Next, droid 2 comes with 8Gb internal storage while droid X has "only" 6Gb (well, a bit more) but is compensated by the bigger SD card included (this depends on how Verizon will bundle it).
If you plan to take some pictures and make some movies with your phone, droid X is better. Better camera (8 MP with dual led) compared with the 5 Mp on droid 2. I know for sure droid X can take 720p video ... I don't know about droid 2 but i assume it can do that too.
Droid X has FM radio and noise cancellation too.
As i said, depends what you will be doing.
Sending lot of SMS, emails, writing reports on the field => droid 2
Watching movies, web navigation, pictures => droid X
Also, you should go on a specialized forum and check for each of them to see which are the problems with both models.
There is no perfect phone
All of them have issues ...
Personally, i'll go with X because i take small movies and some images on the trails with my X10 and the better camera makes a difference
Both phones are good. I've played with them both a little. (i have an HTC Evo w/ 8mp dual LED, and 8gb SD card) But anyway. I would personally prefer the DX over the D2 biggest 2 reasons is screen size, and the DX doesn't have a slide out keypad..I hate moving parts like that. Sure the phone is great, but that feature just isn't for me.
But as J.H. said, it could be an advantage if you use it for sending alot of emails...BUT it just takes a little time and you can be as good with the touchscreen keypad.
And as svmtbman said, Swype is awesome!
But i say go with either. its personal preference.
These android phones are great. Don't get me wrong i loved and would still love my iPhone (if it wasn't for crap ATT). But now that i've went to Sprint, and the Evo, i couldn't be happier with the android phone...
The DX is closest to what i have, being its HTC as well, so im partial
I was already to pick up the Droid 2 when It came out, the only thing that stopped me was the 5 mp camera again. I have had the 1st Droid since launch day and the only bad thing about it is the crappy 5 mp camera. If the camera isn't a concern maybe size might. The Droid x is huge! Most people I know have switch to using a holster for it, I can't stand it. My phone belongs in my pocket not strapped to my waist. I have also heard rumors of another Droid coming out in a month or so.
A few weeks ago, I bough a Droid X and my wife bought a Droid 2. She chose the D2 because she thought she'd like the hard keyboard better than the software keyboard, but it turns out she never really uses the hard keyboard since Swype and voice recognition are so awesome. Now she wants to return the D2 and replace it with the DX because she likes the bigger screen. I have to agree with her on all counts. The bigger screen on the DX also makes it a better in-car navigation unit when used with the car docking station. I love my Droid X.
If you're into modding your phone at all, so far the Droid X has a locked boot loader. That's a big issue regarding loading custom ROMs & such.
I have my original Droid and it's a blast, overclocked to 1.25ghz. Before the 2.2 patch was officially released, I had it running safely on my phone for 2 months before hand. This might not matter to many, but I like the customization ability of this thing.
Also check out androidforums.com, they can help answer any questions you have regarding this.

thanks for the info.
I looked at other forums but it always seemed to get in a pissing match then went over my head. atleast here i always get good info.
I have never used a phone like this I'm just not sure about touch or key board and the size of the x. I carry my phone in my front pocket. I guess I just have to bite the bullet and make a decision.

I have a 4" Xperia X10.
Just 0.3 smaller than DX.
I can keep int in my jeans ... is not big at all for my hands.
Just go to a dealer shop and play with both.
As i said, if you take it with you in your jeep, you might want the DX.
Bigger screen => better for navigation
Better camera => better movies/images taken on the trails
If you are not the type of guy modding his phone, you shouldn't care about boot loader, rooting, ROMs, etc.
I love my Droid X. It's my first smart phone and IMO amazing. I came from an enV2 and there is no comparison. After rooting my X, I've been able to almost double the battery life by killing useless programs. The only thing that worries me, is with extended internet browsing, the back of the phone gets pretty warm. The call quality is excellent and the camera is awesome. It even has a built in panoramic mode. Took these photos with it yesterday on my way to work.
Rooting the phone gains superuser access. This allows you to get into all the folders and stuff that they normally lock out. By these means I am able to disable any programs that I want. Most people don't need this ability, but I'm kind of a nerd, so I did it.
so the way it is looking every one that i have asked says the droid x is the phone to get.
I've got the Droid X, my wife's got the Droid 2, my son has the Droid Incredible, I used to have the BlackBerry Storm and other older BlackBerry's, I've played with friends' iPhone 4's and older iPhones. My vote goes to the Droid X.
The Droid X's 8 MP camera and HD camcorder are quite awesome, but only in good lighting. In low lighting, it starts to look like any other phone camera. Color balance is pretty good though compared to other phone cameras. The dual LED flash and three microphones are nice features too. Be sure to check out the different camera modes.
