Dual 10" Polk Subs in custom trunk enclosure

Hey all. My idea is this: mount 2 downfiring 10" DVC Polk subs in a custom sealed enclosure behind my rear seat. I wanted to put the amps (Alpine m500 and a 2 channel) below the enclosure mounted to the tub. I plan to mount the enclosure on sliders (slide out of trunk), so that i can pull the subs out if need be...any major concerns/issues with this? Ill try to find some pics to show you what i want to do.
Oh and im gonna wire them to get 4ohms load on the amp.

Shouldn't have any issues. Just measure and re-measure while in the design/building process. Make sure you calculate your volume correctly and make sure you have enough room to fit the subs on the face while keeping them far enough from the floor to allow for the xmax travel.

I'm going to do the same but with a single 12" ported.

put 2 of these 10's and you will be happy with the price. they are very well built subs for a damn good price.

DCON-10 D4

or two of these

i have one of these mounted in my center console. had it there for 6 or so months. lose the bass completely when doors are off or top is down so i wanted to build something to regain the lows.
Polk Audio DXi 104 DVC DXi Series 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils at Crutchfield.com

Bonus Question: If a subwoofer's specs say it needs 1.25 cu. ft. of space for a ported enclosure, do 2 subwoofers need 2.5 cu. ft. of space?

^^ yes. But that 1.25 cu ft is the internal volume not counting the volume you need for your port or speaker displacement.

You may end up running into some serious volume issues if you plan to keep the amps under the box. I would put the amps under the rear seat as this will allow you to have more space in the rear "trunk" area for the box and proper volume required. Also your gas tank is right below the trunk area and you need to be VERY sure that you dont drill into it while mounting anything. As for the subs on a slider, it should work nicely just remember if it is easy for you to take them out then it will be easy for a thief. I hate saying things like that cause most people will never have an issue but its something to consider. I currently have 1 kicker cvT the thin mount ones in a sealed box behind my seat, I mounted it to the tailgate so I could secure it without the gas tank issue. Good luck and enjoy!

Yeah I knew i needed to make an enclosure big enough. each sub is rated at .66 cu. ft. so i need 1.32 cu. ft. I worked out the math to be over 1.5 cu. ft. And the sliders would be situated so that they slide out the trunk. When i get down to actually sizing everything up I will revisit the theft potential.

it would have to be one big amp to make any type of change to the sound. mount the amps were they can stay dry and out of sight and have ventilation to it doesn't over heat.

I was thinking more along the lines of dimensions and space needed. for example:
2" tall amp
2" minimum clearance for downfiring subs
thats already 4" up from the floor and theres only like 14" to the top of the tailgate if I remember correctly. also the rear seat tapers back making the clearance at the top of the box only 9" or so. Just going to have to be a really tall box for that to happen properly.

These measurements are probably not "Spot" on since its been a long time since I did the planning for my box so dont go building off my memory but just wanted to give a heads up since this is something I have been thru already.

i really appreciate the advice! ill crunch the numbers tomorrow on the box. right now im working out the amps/subs. looks like ill be running the subs with dual m500s. (picking up another one tomorrow).
My original idea for amp placement was on the sidewall of the tub in the trunk area. i would lose width, but preserve height. and yes, ill have 3 amps total. might mount the 2channel amp on the tailgate

lilyeller. when you said volume i thought your were talking about sound not space.

I've read different things about mounting the amp directly to the enclosure, it makes sense not to because of the vibrations. But it seems like everyone is doing it!! If I can mount them safely to the enclosure, it would make my life a lot easier, id put them on the rear, facing the trunk

"Technically speaking" its not good to mount the amp to the box but thats how I have done many systems in my own cars. The only casualty I have had is when I had 4 12's and some Audiobahn amps pushing them. The fan on both the amps fell out of the amp and overheated one of them. it rattled right off. However, that was likely to happen anyways cause those are CHEAP amps lol. so call it what you may but I would say you only have a limited space and do what you need to get it all to fit. I would certainly mount the amp to the box again if I had to. But for me under the rear seat works fine cause they dont get rained on. And what little water that does get inside when the top is off goes right under the amps cause they are lifted off the true bottom of the tub by the little ridges that are built into the floorboard.

^^ What he said.

Really you're not likely to damage the amp by having it mounted on the enclosure. Ideally you'd have it mounted elsewhere but it's not likely to shorten the amps life by mounting it there.

Just remember to compensate for the size of the trunk lock and the thickness of the wood you're using when your calculating the size of your box!

i got the build underway. ripped out the rest of the carpet, took out my instatrunk, unhooked my amps, thought about the location of the (3) amps. i think ive decide on mounting one of my mono amps to the right side of the tub next to the enclosure and have the other two mounted next to each other on the tailgate. i have 13" sliders that will bring the enclosure all the way out the back of my tailgate if/when i want to remove the speakers. what do you all think?

What do you plan on doing with the wiring to the two amps on the tailgate? And I'm still not sure on the sliders. Seems like with the small space in the rear area, the sliders are kinda unnecessary... Just my opinion..

Thanks for the feedback. I never run a rear seat and I have my spare in the back until I build/buy a tire carrier. I want it to be relatively easy to pull the subs out if need be (and sliders seem to be the most effective and easiest way to do so. PLUS, I need to space the subs off of the tub anyways.

Now that I think about it, it might be best to mount the 2 mono amps to the back side of the enclosure, and find a spot for or get rid of the 2 chan amp. Does anyone know the biggest amp that can fit under/in the front passenger seat while retaining the tilt function?

What are each of the amps for? 2 separate mono amps plus a 2 ch amp??

Are the sliders dual purpose?? 1, for removal assistance and 2,for anchoring to the floor? If so then I can see where that would be nice since you said you don't have a back seat to retain the box.

I have 3 amplifiers total. 2x Alpine M500 mono block (each one will power one sub), and a lighting audio 2 channel amp. The 2 channel amp is powering the soundbar speakers.
Yes the sliders are for anchoring the enclosure, and to also make it easily removable.

What model are the subs? I'd be cautious trying to run an amp per sub, especially if they're in a shared airspace.

Let me know the model and voice coil configuration of the subs and I'll see if you would be able to run both off one amp efficiently..

The amps are Alpine MRP-M500. Subwoofers are Polk Audio DXi 104 DVC 4 ohms. I'm planning on running them at 2 ohms.
I haven't decided on the shared/separate air issue. I am researching it now. Looks like ill have 1.515 ft^3 of air space not including the driver displacement. Each sub calls for .66 ft^3 of air sealed and 1.25 ft^3 ported.

I have a similar box for 2 tens in the back of my YJ. I mounted my amp (Alpine 2 x whatever the stereo guy sold me) under the drivers seat frame. This way I only have to remove a pair of speaker wires and the box is out. Didn't want to worry about the signal wires and power wires shorting out when the box is out. I have removed it several times, and glad I did it that way. I welded a couple pieces of flat strap to the upper part of the seat frame to mount the amp to. This way it's off of the floorboard protected from heat and moisture to a degree as well.

A better fit would have been only one of those mono amps and the same subs only in a DVC 2ohm version. This would have allowed a series/parallel wiring so both subs would show a 2ohm load to one amp and it would give each sub 250watts..

As/is, if you're dead set on running both amps, I'd highly suggest separate airspaces for each sub. It's going to be difficult to get both amps to give exactly the same signal/power to each sub which is why the separate airspace will be helpful.

I don't know if those amps are strappable or if that would even help in this case...

i got one of the subs brand new for 30 bucks and the amp for 70 barely used. i looked up strapping the m500 but didnt see anything. it might sound dumb, but what if i had the subs configured in a way that each amp has a coil on both subs?

Bad idea since it is hard enough to get the amps to put out the same power. You run 2 amps on one sub is just asking for trouble.
