Bearing in mind that a screening of "Smokey & the Bandit" would probably double my current knowledge of CB's...
Last night I installed a new Midway 1001z CB in my 2001 Wrangler. Wiring was a snap (I do know a bit about electronics... just not CB's), and it turns on fine. I have the power connected straight to the battery with a 40A fuse right at the battery. There is also a 10A fuse next to the CB itself. Then I connected the CB to a 4' Firestick antenna "kit".
I mounted the antenna to the bumper, putting the "white" washer on top of the bumper to insulate the antenna. On the underside of the bumper I made sure the cable connection was grounded to the bumper by scraping the area until bare metal was exposed. Question: Did I do this backwards? Is the antenna supposed to be grounded and the cable insulated?
After getting everything hooked up w/ no adjustments, I'm basically getting nothing, nada, not even static. When I press the button on the mike, I can hear a click over the speaker. When I turn the squelch all the way down, I can hear a quiet humm or buzz, but that's it. I assumed I'd hear lots of static at this point. Obviously, nothing was picked up on any channel either.
Is this enough information to determine if there is something broken inside the CB? I did make the mistake of turning on the CB before the antenna was connected... then noted in the directions that's a No-No. Did I burn up the transmitter???
