Finally started ham install

Pictures aren't the greatest but I started making the mount for the remote head late this afternoon.

It got a ways to go

Just a suggestion: Temporarily hook power to it and see if you can see the display from your seat OK. Some of the displays are better than others with viewing it at an angle.

I had to tilt the radios in my truck a little because of it.

Looks good!

Way ahead of you. It's got a slight tilt and can swivel left or right.

Thanks

Pulled the mount out of the Jeep this morning, not what I wanted. Back to the drawing board.

Thumbs up

Looks good none the less. Is it going to be enclosed when done?
I just picked up a pre-loved Ft-7100M today. I sold an old FT-50R ht to get it. I just couldn't scrounge up enough to do the 208H. At least the 7100 has dual receive. I'm drawing up a console idea for the control head up top with the radio in the center console I think. This one will have just a full enclosure at the front for the control head, Open along the middle for switches, and about 10 inches enclosed at the back for a fuse block I have and a speaker.
Anyway. Looks good Geeps.

I'm going back to my original plan.

I've finished a design similar to my small box design that mounts between the front sports cage and the windshield frame. It's a deeper version of that box and uses the same type of lock, so it will be a secured mount.

Good luck on your console, sounds like a good design.

The main unit for my radio is going to be mounted in my rear storage box. I have a secure mount designed for it so it will be out of sight if someone is able to pry open my box.

I sure would appreciate any pictures of the enclosures being discussed. I want to keep my radio safe but also easy to access and use.

Some of my consoles can be found here:

I was hoping to be able to post pictures of what I'm currently working on but the adhesive is curing very slowly at the moment.

GEEPS: Which Trail Cage do you have and what is measurement of the clear distance between the two front/back bars?

I leaning toward getting one of the Bolt-In types to add to the OEM cage. I have looked at Rockhard and Poison Spyder. Any other good ones?

It's right around 26 inches on my 2000, if I remember correctly, it's around 25 inches on newer Jeeps because of the additional padding. (a little foggy this morning)

Mine is a Toys by Troy. It's not a bad cage but if I had to do it again I'd go with the Poison Spyder. Rockhard makes a great cage, it's just they weld in a flat plate on the underside of the spreaders.

Forgot one, http://www.orfab.com/Sportcage.htm

You might check with some of the other Jeep guys for suggestions as well.

Sorry, I was not clear. I meant the width between the two bars. I know we have discussed radio dimensions before and I was wondering how wide I could go.

I'll look at those two manufacturers. Thanks!

I set mine with 11 inches between the spreaders. I did it that way so I could add rollbar padding and still clear the consoles.

So with the padding and your side rails for the overhead console, do you have 7-1/2" ~ 8" clear for a radio?

Sneak Peek

This is what I'm working on right now.

Similar to the other small box I have installed only this one flips 180 degrees.

the lock setup

Mounts between the front crossbar and the windshield frame.

The console that's in my Jeep at the moment has only 7 inches between the rails. Still, it handles 6 switches without a problem

http://www.otrattw.com/sw1.htm

The consoles I'm working on now will have 7 1/2 inches between the side rails.

I can build them narrower, just depends on the radio.

I finished one recently that housed a Uniden PC 78, the thing's a monster.

The main section of the radio gets installed in a few days.

Dude, I may just end up saving so I can buy one of yours. I could sell my first born but a week later I would get a demand for a refund.

Very nice stuff!

I checked the website out and I'm not clear if the radio control head storage box will work with a stock 99 TJ roll cage? Also, could you mount two control heads? I really like the idea of just putting the conrol head on top with the main unit somewere else (storage box with a fan to keep the radios happy might be good).

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks!

That mount wouldn't work unless you have a front sports cage installed.

It's made for just one control head. There isn't enough space between the front crossbar and windshield frame for two heads. A non-secure mount could be made to fit that area above the mirror for two control heads.

The rear storage box is where I will be installing the main unit. I'm working on a secure mount in the back of the box that will hide the radio from sight should someone be able to open the box from inside the Jeep.

Since the mount is new I will be testing it out this week. I have a TBT sports cage, and the windshield frame isn't attached to the front cage, so I'm expecting the usual squeaks. I just want to be sure they isn't any additional squeaks.

Thanks Guys!!

The main body of the radio is back in my storage box. If someone did break that open, they would see

and after clearing away all my stuff, this

I don't have a picture, but the radio has plenty of air.

The lock system on that box will be upgraded as soon as the locks come in.

I have an idea for a rear storage box. I will have to draw a sketch and email it to you. Tuffy needs some competition!
