F'ing Sony Blu Ray Player

It's been running fine for 4 months. Tonight it decides to crap all over two Netflix Blu Ray movies and not play them. WTF?

I don't own a BR player, but I've done some reading...

I've seen that they (the manufacturers) have been updating the encryption systems to combat piracy (arrrrgggh). Check the sony website and look up your model. I've seen that you can either connect them to the internet or flash them to update them so they'll work.

Sony?? Dude

What's wrong with Sony? I've always heard good things about them. Is there something I don't know?

My buddies new Sony BR took a crap after less than a week. Got it Christmas eve, worked fine, on New Years Eve it quit recognizing that a BR was installed and acted like the tray was empty.

I got a Sony BR as well, has been fine so far. We got it for xmas, watch movies all the time and no problems yet. Shame to hear so many issues with it. I was pulling for HD dvd personally, but I figured since Sony INVENTED BR, their players have to be at least half way decent?

For the price difference from the cheapest Blu Ray players to a Playstation 3 console, I am not sure why anyone would not buy the PS3. It is way more versitile, can actually rent or buy movies directly thru the Playstation Network, and it is updated quite frequently so you don't have the problem of "out of date" malfunctions. Not to mention it looks way cooler than any Blu Ray players I have seen.

Saw a headline on YahooNews about Sony lowering the cost of their PS3 because of low sales and to contend with the lower priced XBox 360. Has anyone heard of an actual price yet? They're still $399 here in middle America.

When I went looking for a Blue Ray player last year I found that many of the Sony's weren't software upgradable. New software for encryption (as previously mentioned) gets pushed down every now and again and if your device isn't updated, you won't be able to view the disc's that employ the new schema's. The PS3, however automatically downloads updates from the Internet as they arise and keeps itself up to date.

So...I opted for the PS3..."blue ray with perks"

My Sony BR was $227 last month; works great. Audio has theater compensation for lower volumes so that the sub-woofers are just as effective no matter how high the volume is set... ...true HD sound is incredible. 65" of flawless picture.

So after just a couple of minutes with Sony Tech Support in an on-line chat she had an update disc on it's way to me. Two days later it was in my mailbox. Thirty minutes later firmware updated and all is good!

Sony is my friend again.
