Force Dock Connection with iPhone 4 using 430N

Hello!

Is there a way to force Dock Connection for my connection to the 430n on my iPhone4 (ios5) instead of UConnect for playing music files? I'd like to be able to just plug in my phone and go rather than select the dock connector each time. I would still like to use the uconnect for phone calls.

Thanks,
Syd

hello Syd, what year is your vehicle? Some of the older SW in Uconnect was allowing Apple to control the audio path, later Uconnect changed this to be Uconnect controlled.

Looks like the A2DPblocker app may be a possible solution but the current version (V1.0) is having some issues. The developer has implemented fixes and is waiting on Apple to approve version 1.1. Price is 2.99 USD

Details from app store:

Description
NOTICE
------------------------------------------//
- iOS 5 users: a bug in iOS 5 is causing the app to hang, an update will be issued soon.
- iOS 4 & iOS 5 users: multitasked background audio is coming soon so stay tuned for the update which will address your backgrounding issues
- if you have iOS 4.0 or later you will need to enable the "Background Audio" feature and then adjust the independent volume slider when "A2DPblocker" is turned on.

WHAT IS IT?
------------------------------------------//
A2DPblocker blocks the Bluetooth Stereo Profile (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile A2DP) from connecting on a Bluetooth enabled iOS device without completely disabling the Bluetooth hardware, which enables the iOS device to continue to perform other Bluetooth functions like make calls over Bluetooth and wirelessly control the iPod with a paired AVRCP enabled Bluetooth accessory.

Since the release of iOS 3.0, A2DP has been causing headaches for many iOS users and I was so tired of my A2DP enabled Bluetooth car kit automatically connecting to my iPhone and silencing my music that I wrote this app to avoid fumbling around with the iPod app just to change the default audio output device back to the dock connector.

This app will block A2DP from connecting and maintain the default audio output device when it's running in the foreground including when the screen is locked and in the background (coming soon to multitasking enabled iOS devices).

You can finally disable A2DP once and for all with this app and stop manually changing the default audio output device each time your car kit, headset, or whatever A2DP enabled Bluetooth accessory you have connects to your iOS device.

FEATURES
------------------------------------------//
- blocks A2DP.
- maintains the default audio output device.
- built-in iPod controls.
- background audio (requires iOS 4.0 or later).
- suppresses audio alerts.

HOW TO USE
------------------------------------------//
Switch "A2DPblocker" on and begin playing the iPod with the built-in iPod controls or an attached accessory and never worry about A2DP again. If you have iOS 4.0 or later you will need to enable the "Background Audio" feature and then adjust the independent volume slider when "A2DPblocker" is turned on.

REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------------------//
- requires iOS 3.1 or later.
- Bluetooth.
- microphone or other audio input.
- works best with multitasking (coming soon!).

Syd,
when you have the phone paired up and then plug the docking cable into the phone, do you hear a bleep and then then the charging screen is displayed on the phone?

You shouldn't need the app that you are showing above in your other post.

My phone does connect via the dock connector but it does seem to default to the Uconnect connection instead of the dock connection output for playing music. I'd like to set it so that when I connect with the dock connector that it is the default connection. Currently I need to select dock connector on the phone each time I connect.

As a side note, I prefer the dock connection because it allows me to choose playlists, podcasts and other items from the 430n touchscreen.

I think the app would allow for this but still let calls through so that I can answer via uconnect (bluetooth).

Ok, for the issue with the docking connections. I believe that I know what is going on but first I need to ask a question. Did you pair the phone before you plugged into i-Tunes and named the phone?
What is the name that you gave the phone? Are there any characters other than alpha characters?
If you're not sure where to find the name, go to settings, general, about. Then look at the top of the page ----- Name-----.
If you did pair first then downloaded music files later (or even if you're not sure), please:
Delete the pairing of the phone from Uconnect:
Press & release the Uconnect button and say "set up, device pairing, delete device". You will be asked the name of the phone, if you remember the name that you gave it then say that, if not then just say "all".

Uconnect will delete the pairing of the phone (s)
Now delete Uconnect from the phone:
settings, general, bluetooth, press the Uconnect line, then forget this device.

Now start a new pairing session of the phone & Uconnect. Then try the docking cable.

You see what Uconnect does is look for the friendly name of the phone, if the phone had name in the "about" section or even no name, and then a different or new name was given when you used i-tunes then Uconnect would see 2 different devices and then you would have to select which you wanted to play from.

The name on my phone is Syd and hasn't been changed since my initial pairing. I did go through the steps of deleting the pairing and re-pairing the phone but when connecting the USB cable the phone still defaults to uconnect (bt) and not the dock connection output which I need to select manually.

When you plug in your iPhone via USB to the 430n, does it connect directly via the dock or Bluetooth?

I have been able how to duplicate this issue on the RHB (430N). what is the build date of your vehicle? this can be found on the drivers door. There is a sticker and the build code is "MHD".
When you select media and the BT is streaming, the radio should display your phone's friendly name (ex: Syd). When you plug in the docking cable, Uconnect should display "reading" on the radio" after the reading is completed and the music starts to play, please press the device tab on the radio touch screen. What is displayed there?

I'll check on the manufacture date but I would guess it is fairly recent (2012 model). When I hit the device button I see the selection for Line in (grayed out), USB symbol with "iPod" underneath, and BT symbol with "Syd" underneath.

Syd, Can you tell me if the pictures below are similar to what you see in your vehicle? Thanks for your patience here, I'm sure we'll get this figured out.

No worries and thanks for the help.

Everything is identical with the exception of the bottom picture. I am able to select dock connector or BT with no error message. If I go with the dock connector I need to select that output on my phone as well or I just get dead air (still see the meta data though).

Hey Syd,
How old is your phone? What network are you on?
You say that you don't get the message in the last picture?
When you are in docking mode and playing audio, if you try to select "SYD" to try to play thru streaming, what happens.
Can you try something for me? If you don't mind, with the phone not connected to the cable, go into the settings menu- general- about- where you have "SYD" for the name of the phone, can you add a few characters (EX: Syd's phone) after you do this then exit out of the settings menu, start BT streaming audio, wait a few seconds, then plug in the docking cable. What happens? Thanks

Syd, The reason why this worked (and I really haven't figured out why your phone is having problems with this and others aren't, including myself):
Apple threw a wrench in the hand free car kits when they came out with the "Air Play" feature , I believe this was at SW level 4.3. There are many other car companies having issues with this same issue. There are 3 different suppliers that make the Uconnect system for Chrysler, there are 3 because there are 3 different radio manufacturers and each act differently, one radio company (Mitsubishi) builds the RHB, RBZ, RES & REQ radios and they support an external Uconnect module while the others support an internal system. The Supplier for Uconnect on the Mitsubishi radios found a way to help the customer not to be forced to change the docking settings. The way they did this is by the "Friendly name of the phone". During the pairing (and actual use of the phone) of the phone,, there is a lot of information that is going back and forth between the Uconnect and phone systems.. One of the parameters is the friendly name that you gave the phone when you activated it on ITunes. The system sees this name each time you connect the phone (upon re entry to the vehicle), now when you plug the docking cable into the phone, it reads all the data from the IPod section as well as the friendly name. When UConnect sees that the IPod & the phone has the same name, Uconnect disconnects from the the A2DP profile allowing the system to go straight into docking mode.
Now what Uconnect also does is, say that you have a separate IPod loaded with more media because you don't have enough storage on the phone. You have your phone paired and are listening to streaming audio and plug in the IPod, Uconnect Thinks that you want to now listen to the IPod (because, hey you plugged it in). Uconnect will now link up to the IPod.
If you were to go into "DEVICES" you would see "USB / IPod and also Syd. There would be 2 separate systems and you chose which one that you wanted too listen to.
So basically, this is what I have had you do. You paired the phone under the name "Syd" and then I had you add the additional alpha characters (phone) to it. So Uconnect sees 2 separate systems, "Syd & Syd's phone".

Well let me know how this continues to work for you. I will also continue to look into the strangeness of why your phone is acting like this because as you can see on this forum, if people were experiencing the same issues there would be a long thread about it. Talk to you soon.

xsdbs- Thank you! That seems to have done it! Very nice being able to just plug the iphone in and start driving rather than waiting to change the output.

Hi, Xsdbs. Since you were so helpful with Syd's issue, I thought I'd ask if you can help figure out my problem...

I'm hoping that someone else here has had this experience and has either figured out a work-around or figured out how to fix it. After hours of looking online, all I'm finding is other people with the same problem and no fixes, and boy is this issue annoying!!

When I start up my 2012 JKU Sport, my iphone automatically connects through the BT to the stereo... fantastic. The problem is that it ALSO automatically starts up the music player (even if the phone doesn't show the music player actually playing or even open) and when I try to stop the music playing, it pauses for a second and then starts playing again... there is seemingly no way to stop the music or turn off the player. It also drains my phone battery because the player is playing in the background the entire time it's connected to the stereo via BT.

Where this becomes a problem is if I'm listening to an audiobook through another app on my phone, there are connectivity issues or if my passenger is watching a movie or Netflix, the audio is out of sync with the video because the audio is being shanghaied by the music player (which I can't turn off).

Has anyone formed a fix for this issue or found any way around it? Any help would be very appreciated as I'm about to throw my iphone out of the car at 90 to see if it bounces.

Thank you in advance!

Hey Muppy2012JKU,
I'm responding here as well as the other thread that you started. I have a couple questions:
1) What network is your IPhone 4s on?
2) You mention the "media player", is the IPod media player that is stock on the phone or is it an add on app?
3) If it's the IPod player, when you get into the vehicle, you say that it's playing but not showing that it's playing on the phone screen? The IPod gets put on "pause" when it is not selected as the AUX device by pressing the "AUX" tab in the media display.
4) The pressing of the "pause" button on the phone is not a supported feature. This is why when you press the "pause" tab, the music stops and then starts again. (normal) The starting and pausing of the player is done only by the onscreen tab on the radio display.
5) The radio does not control the Uconnect system in this radio. The Uc is a separate module, however it does not send out constant BT signal to the A2DP profile. It only connects to the (should) when the "AUX" tab is selected from the Media screen.
6) If you have the IPod screen displayed, when you say it is running, is the play timer counting up?
Lets start here and see how to proceed, okay. Thanks
