As the title says im getting a Pioneer DEH-X5700HD. now im not a newbie to installing aftermarket radios into vehicles, but im a little curious as to which harness is needed to install correctly and still be able to maintain the factory steering wheel controls?

I've seen literally 3 or so different options on crutchfield and i don't want to spend money on something that is really not needed. i have a 2014 JKU sport WITHOUT the alpine system or any of the options.

thanks for any info guys !!

Crutchfield options are pretty well laid out, if you know what you want (Package Codes: 8, 7, 6, 2 if you are purchasing with the headunit). I recommend Package Code 8 at $104.98 with purchase of the radio. It will retain the power off delay of the stock system when you turn the key off and will allow use of the USB port in the console if you have it. If you do not have USB, go with Package Code 7 at onl $89.99 with the deck.

Package 8 comes with a iDatalink setup that I know nothing about, but it looks slick. I had the PAC SWI setup in my VW and it was annoying setting up, but that is mostly the headunit/vehicle manufacturers fault and not PAC's. Eventually the button programming got jumbled and up was down, etc. Other than the steering wheel integration stuff, the PAC equipment was flawless.

Well i didnt get any of the packages. The headunit was a gift. I was honestly checking for other alternatives considering crutchfield is pricey. I plan on just doing this unit no speakers yet or anything

All new CAN-bus cars are not cheap to integrate the stereo. Lump in steering wheel controls and it gets pricier. PAC and other companies have to write logic to translate Alpine/Pioneer/etc. language into Chrysler/Honda/etc. language and then shove it all into a neat package behind the dash.

In your case, I would just look for PAC RP4-CH11 if you want factory interface with steering wheel control and key-off power delay. It looks like you can get it for 84 bucks from WallyWorld. Not gonna get any cheaper than that without splicing wires directly to the vehicle.

You will also need an antenna adaptor if you want AM/FM. Look for Metra 40-EU10 to adapt the Chrysler antenna to the Motorola style socket on the headunit. Crutchfield seems to think you need an 18" extension, so you might need this as well: Metra 44-EC18, but stry it without first.

by the way thanks for the responses guys !! anywho as i said in another thread, the PAC RP4-CH11 unit is not only 149.99 from crutchfield but its also a hell of alot cheaper via walmart at 83 bucks plus free shipping.

so IF i end up going with the Pac unit is there wire splicing required to get the steering wheel controls to work correctly or is it just plug and play with the aftermarket stereo and the pac harness?

If it's like the unit I had, I think you will need to run a B+ from the battery to the Pioneer harness, a ground from the Pioneer to the body sheetmetal; speaker outs, illumination and ACC signal wires from the Pioneer harness to the vehicle harness adaptor; I think all other connections are between the PAC unit and the factory adaptor and should be made already. The steering wheel control will be done via a 3.5mm headphone style plug to the back of the Pioneer. It will be preprogrammed to the Chrysler buttons so it will work straight away.

If you have never done a headunit before, I would consider letting an audio shop do it (NOT Best Buy!). They may solder up the harness for less than a full install would cost. If you lay it out, follow the install instructions and take your time, solder and heat shrink all connections, you should be able to do it.

Ive done tons of head units... never any with this extra harness needed. Last unit i installed was a an avic F series in my 05 mitsu.

i might start ordering the extra tidbits today. black surround piece, possibly the Pac harness. i really don't think i'll need their antenna attachment. seems like another unnecessary piece.

The Maestro iDatalink is fantastic...haven't used PAC. Once the Maestro harness was attached to the head unit harness, there were no other wiring connections necessary to the vehicle, battery, etc. If you want AM/FM reception, you WILL need the antenna adapter. As for the antenna extension, I did not think I would need it either until I went to put the NEX into the dash and discovered the antenna cable would not quite reach since the connection on the new head unit was on the driver's side rather than the passenger side. It's nice to be able to make your connections without first having to slide the head unit most of the way into the dash. The extension allows you to do that with the antenna. Crutchfield may be more expensive, but I've found their tech support and advice to be flawless. They can tell you exactly what you need...will even put the cart together for you...and there is no obligation to buy from them though I almost always do. If you go to their website and put the 5700 into your cart, it will tell you exactly what you need for your particular vehicle and give you several options.

i saw that, the only thing when i was looking and trying that out their packages would throw my $110 dollar headunit into a almost $300 install....

i remember throwing in a an Avic F series nav/dvd/cd/hd radio/ipod unit into my 05 mitsubishi evolution. i didn't recall having to go all out with the install like this basic headunit for this vehicle... its quite shocking actually..

now investigating more, i was looking up crutchfield packages for some reason they have 2 antenna adapters listed? our both really necessary? i would think one would get the job considering pioneer units usually give you abit of extra slack with the headunit antenna wiring.

purchased PAC RP4-CH11 from walmart.com - $88.89 total Free shipping.

purchased Metra 99-6511 Dash Kit $14.99

purchaseded Metra 44-EC18 Antenna Extension Cable $4.99

both from crutchfield

i spent a total of $115.86

If i were to have ordered any of their packages alone it would have ran me more with extra parts and pieces i DON'T need.

so do i... buy a cheap harness made for your vehicle, connect the new units wires to the harness, connect that harness to the vehicle harness , connecting the antenna, and the ground and thats it..

thats a big negative sir.... #1 the headunit was a gift from my girlfriend. number 2 If she were to have gotten one the package i were to have considered, the total of that package would have have been $245 dollars.

I saved a significant amount by just buying the PAC unit via walmart.com and buying the other components just separately from crutchfield.

PAC unit has to be spliced to your Headunit wiring. Since you bought one there should be a wiring diagram for you to hook it up to the Headunit. Make sure you use the wire set that hooks into your JK wiring prior to soldering. I didn't have steering wheel co trolls so I didn't need to worry about hooking those up. I also order off eBay for like $10 the parking brake bypass in case I wanted to have a DVD playing while in motion. Promised the wife I won't watch a movie while driving but I also don't like someone be telling me my passengers can't if they wanted to. It's pretty easy to hook into the PAC.

Apparently they are son.... if you read my posts above, the headunit was a Christmas gift from my girlfriend. She didn't opt for any packages at the time of her purchase for me. However when i was pricing out everything from both crutchfield and other locations. crutchfields price for the PAC RP4-CH11 Wiring Interface compared to Walmart.com was a $61 dollar and change difference from crutchfields $149.99. the other parts however i couldnt find them anywhere cheaper. they either had similar pricing or less but higher shipping expenses. so i ended buying the few other tidbits via crutchfield

I'm not one to piss my hard earned money away so i tend to look to save everyway i can, and $61 bucks can go a long way for myself.

If you want to see an install look at my audio build thread. Link in my Sig. The PAC is what you want. If it wasn't mentioned above you will also need a mounting kit from Metra.

#30 ·
appreciate it !! yea i now have all the items i need, however im going to wait for a buddy of mine to solder up the wires for me. after he does that then im gonna do the install.

I might even take the stock radio out today considering its a nice day here in florida

Does anybody know which harness is to be used? because the Pac unit came with a A harness and B harness... i searched but really no luck, and i checked their manual but that doesn't help out at all neither.

#33 ·
that would require me to remove the stock 130 though... :lmao: good idea, i figured someone might know prior to me doing so. I wanted to just rush and give the harnesses to my buddy to have him solder it up.

#34 ·
Getting to the harness isn't the big of a deal. I've done it a couple of times now in the past week. Pop the top (you'll loose the clips inside, use a magnetic wand to find and reinstall), remove the lower cover by pulling it off, unscrew the four bolts and done. Gotten it under 5 minutes with no problem now ;)

#35 ·
it looks easy... i saw i video on youtube about a week ago on how to remove it. i'll try to get on it tomorrow if times permits
.

Just a update for anyone interested. I haven't had the time this past weekend to try and removing the stock 130n head unit, so since i have this upcoming friday off with my weekend i'll start it up this week. looking forward to getting this done already.

#40 ·
had time today to finally remove the upper dash and take the stock 130n radio out... easy peasy. i however took the Pac unit and the wiring harnesses to a stereo shop. they gave me some BS saying that it might not work and blah blah blah. i knew he was BSing me so i decided i'll bring it to a friend of mine who does this for a living and he'll take care of it for me.

I hate it when get these shops that try to rip you off...

So today after finally getting the harness soldered and heat shrink wrapped. i go to start installing this headunit. the Pac harness fits to the vehicle harness. im almost 100% sure the radio harness will fit, but as i go to install the antenna extension apparently i need some sort of crap adapter....

So now i need to hunt this specific piece down and try getting it for a reasonable price.....
