When recording inside the Jeep, you can use the Skeleton housing. This has open sides which allows one to charge and record at the same time and exceed the normal 2.5hr battery limit. It's kinda useful if you honestly need more power than one battery can provide (more on that below), such as 9hrs of time-lapse photos:

If you must use the sealed housing or are mounting the camera outside the Jeep (away from DC), you can buy a battery Backpac which snaps onto the camera itself, doubling your battery life.

The Hero2 will do 120fps only in 480p mode. 720p is limited to 60fps, and 1080p is 30fps (720p60 is my default setting). See Product Comparison: HD HERO2 & HD HERO Cameras for more info.

Movie clip length may be limited by the max file size that your particular SD card can handle, but the camera itself has no such limitation.

Note that the Hero 960 does not have the Backpac port, so no LCD screen nor extended battery can be attached.

I LOVE my HD Hero2. I personally think the video quality improvements were worth the upgrade from my Hero1, but the Hero1 is a VERY worthy purchase for $100 less. I'd avoid the 960 no matter how cheap it is. The lack of the expansion port is going to seriously limit one's options. Then again, they're cheap enough to mount beneath the Jeep and not worry too much about losing one.

And for all you battery life worriers, seriously consider the reality of filming. When was the last time you took a full 2.5 hours of video of a single event without an AC or DC outlet nearby? I've had both of my GoPro's out in the wilderness and/or out on the lake for multiple 3-day weekends and never plugged them in until returning home. You click Rec, let it go for 1-4 minutes while some event is happening, click Stop for a half hour until somebody else is going to try something stupid, then click Rec for another 1-4 minutes. IMO, 2.5 full hours of video is more than any realistic person would grab in a weekend. Honestly, the batteries in these things are pretty impressive. I'd spend more time worrying about running out of storage before running out of juice.

And don't discount the GoPro's cheap fisheye still camera capabilities.

Got the Hero2 and it has been amazing! I have only used it to film myself and my kids on the ski hill. Plan on getting some vehicle mounts for the Jeep and take some video of my wheeling trips.

With a 16GB SD card I can get about 1hr 20mins of filming. With a 32 GB SD card I get just over 2.5hrs with the camera set at 1080p. The delayed 2 second snap shot is a pretty sweet setup for action pictures.

Example of a video I made of my kids shredding my local ski hill in 1080p

I just picked up the Hero 2 Motorsports Edition last week. I haven't had much time to mess with it yet.

One more question

How do you change the speed of the video like the one above? Do you do that after the fact or during? Very much a GoPro noob here.
I suction cupped mine right behind my rear tire on my mustang when I had it and used it at the drags and I never had a problem, even going 100+mph
As long as you mount it on a semi flat dry and clean surface you should be fine.

How is the video quality of this thing in darkish indoor settings? My living room is fairly dark at night with the lights on and the video on my phone and still camera isnt all that great. I would like a replacement for kiddie videos

Went and looked at the GoPro cameras this afternoon at best buy. It looks like best buy stores only carry the GoPro hd hero 2 outdoor editions in store in addition to the GoPro original naked one. You have to buy the motorsport edition online if you want that one. I liked them but I didn't get one. I also didn't know that you cannot view the movie your taking on the back of the camera to see what you're filming unless you buy and additional $79 lcd attachment. Ugh...

Never used one of these myself, but the lens on the Hero 2 is fixed at f/2.8. So you should get pretty darn good lowlight performance.

Yeah, I bought the LCD bacpac. Don't waste your money. It's murder on the battery and it's easy enough to get everything in the picture without it. The HD hero has 127* field of vision in 1080p, which is what I use all the time. THe other resolutions have a 170* field of vision which makes the video fish eyed as well.

I have the HD Hero. It's not the "original" GoPro camera, but it was the first that was HD.

Figures. Not to hijack, but does anyone know how to put music in their video without it getting blocked by youtube or anyone else? I can find the two songs I used in my video, via youtube, and they arent blocked. Does it depend on the source of my music at all? I got it from itunes.

Hello Ageless,

Would you be interested in selling your LCD backpack?
Thanks

There are three FOV settings for taking photos on the Hero2; Wide, Med, and Narrow. The Hero1 is Wide only.

The LCD automatically turns off after 60sec to save battery life, and I've found it very useful to aiming the mount properly. In some cases I've used the LCD to get the camera aimed, then removed it to let the camera do its thing unencumbered by the extra size/drain.

It's also nice to be able to play back your clips (with sound) on the scene rather than waiting till later.

Another benefit is that the camera's settings menus appear as "plain(er) language" on the LCD vs the cryptic iconography on the camera itself.

Overall, I think the LCD Backpac is a matter of preference.

Good to know about the LCD screen. It's just very pricey at $79 for a 1" lcd. I can buy a 32" LCD HDTV for $200 at costco for perspective.

It's a specialty item, niche market. Kinda like tacking "Marine" or "Aviation" to the start or end of any product name.

And I think clipping a 32" LCD to the back of a GoPro may limit one's mounting options. But hey, no judgement here.

Yea I understand that but a 1" lcd cost probably less than $2 to mass produce. It may even cost less. What is that like a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000% mark up?

I still want one

I have no doubt that they're damn cheap to make. Prices will come down over time after the company recovers some R&D, the tech becomes cheaper, and more market products drive competition.

As with anything, they determine the Cost, you determine the Value. If Cost <= Value then Purchase = Yes. If Cost > Value and Purchase = Yes then Wife = Angry Eyes.

Sorry, I'm getting a little off topic. So lessee ... if you want to record your outings it's tough to beat a GoPro, regardless of what accessories you tack on. There, I feel better.

but no. The LCD would have to be manufactured for $0.0000000000000079 for it to be a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000% markup. Just sayin.

I'm sure you're right though about the $2 or less cost in parts but I'm sure they've figured in cost of labor and shipping from China as well as packaging and advertising costs too so they're probably making 30-50 bucks off of each one sold.

I want one too.
