Heck, my favorite antenna is a roll up J-pole. I know the hams know which one I mean. I have a 2 meter beam that I use mostly, but you can't beat that emergency J-pole. It's awesome for the trails too.

I built a J-pole out of copper tubing which works well, but I really like my roll up. It does much better, imo.

Here is the pic.

Yep, I planned a roll up J-pole as our first project, already found a set of plans on the web but I need to either find somebody local with an SWR meter or get one, mine doesn't cover the 2 meter band.

kg4kpg, when you say you built it out supplies you baught from Firestik, did you cut down a CB antenna? or were you able to buy the individual parts? I don't know why but I hadn't considered making antenna's for the Jeeps, thanks.

Individual parts. You can order a catalog and price list from their web site that has everything. http://www.firestik.com/It was really easy. You just have to do a search to find out about how nay times to wrat the wire(if needed) around the shaft. With the 440 I had to cut the wire something like 1 1/4 inches. You leave a little extra and trim it to tune if needed. The apply the shrink wrap, hit it with a heat gun, and your done.

I passed!!!
33 out of 35, about 1/4 of the questions were ones I hadn't seen on the practice tests, that kind threw me at first but I made it.

Now I wanna talk to someone!!!!!

They said it could take upto a month to get my call sign and I'm not authorized to transmit till then
They said they mail the exams to the ARRL who then send em to the FCC, why would they need to go the ARRL first? I was under the impression the ARRL is not a federal agency

ARRL is who the VEC (volunteer examiners) is using. The ARRL files electronically, so it probably won't take very long. That really depends on your VE.

Anyway, congratulations!! That's awesome. I'd better get that radio shipped. I haven't made it yet because work has had me runnin'.

Yall got a local club where you are? Most clubs give the first year membership for free when you are newly licensed.

Congrats!!!!!

It took less than a week before I knew what my call sign was.

You can check online at http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/ or http://www.arrl.org/fcc/fcclook.php3 after a couple of days to see if its posted yet.

X2 on the Congrats!!!!

Watch the website Geeps listed. Your ticket should arrive just after they post it. Let us know your Call Sign.

Time will seem to go slow until then, but mine took about 10 weeks, but that was over 25 years ago before when they did everything by hand.

Yes, once you know your call sign you can transmit. You don't have to wait for the paper copy of your license to arrive.

I was told by my VEC that you also had to use the term "temporary KT" until the hard copy of your license arrives, but I can't find anything online to confirm it.

Temporary kt would be used if you were a novice and had upgraded to a technician, you had to already have a call sign.

Technician to general would be temporary ag
general to extra temporary ae.

Somebody without a license can't transmit untill the call sign is registered with the FCC.

My ARRL VE manual states, "FCC allows newly licensed amateurs to go directly on-the-air once a license has been granted and appears in their amateur service data base" ~ "the hardcopy will arrive, about 7-10 days after"...

I don't think you have to say "Temporary KT", unless you have upgraded from a Novice and you have a CSCE in hand, so you don't have to wait for the posting of the upgrade. People will look it up online anyway if they question it. I have seen it not posted on QRZ in a timely manner, but the FCC is the only one that counts.

Go to http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home and do a search for your name. It will state your new callsign and granted status.

I searched for "SKEETER" in WA, but none were listed...

Are you going to get Ham Plates for your Jeep?

No ham plates, I'll probably call sign and favorite frequency on the back, vanity plates are spendy.

I took a look at the CSCE that the VEC handed to me after I took the technician test. He had circled the temporary/KT. I'm curious now as to why I was told that. I'll have to ask them when I take my next test.

Spendy? In Texas, "Radio Operator" plates are only an extra $2/yr. I looked at the WA DMV, they are an extra $5 for new appl's and no extra charge for renewal. You guys have a better deal! Plus, you can remember your plate number. http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...ialdesign.html

Radio Operator plates are not the same as vanity or special group plates. Check into it with the guys at your ham club.

They should have only circled "Technician" under the New License Class Earned and crossed out everything else that did not apply.

Maybe they use a different form... Who cares, you have your ticket!

He circled the temporary/KT on the back of the CSCE when he mentioned it. No matter.

KT is for upgrading from Novice to Tech, and only when using your new privelages.

You can operate immediately as soon as your call is posted in the FCC database.

I'm pretty sure that was already stated, but I thought I'd clarify, just in case.

Congrats again. Should be an easy call to remember.

I had the tags when I was in Texas. As soon as I pay my damn communist vehicle tax I'll get ham tags here in SC. Georgia is the best deal I've seen. For regular tags they have a 20.00 fee plus an ad-velorem(sp) tax. When you show your FCC ticket you get your new tags and they waive the 20.00 fee. They believe hams are an asset and provide a valuable public service. When I run for the SC state house of representatives I will change it here. Darn poloticians!

In California it's a one-time $22 fee for call sign plates. No other annual fee like our normal vanity plates.
