I was just doing that.

I took a practice Tech exam and missed 17 of 35. A lot of the stuff that I taught myself back in Nov/Dec came back fairly easily.

I guess I'm going to start back at chapter 1 and re-read everything.

Right on, that's pretty good having not gone over it all. A little studying and you'll have it down.

I hated those 'who selects a bla bla bla' beurocratic questions, lol. The technical part was easier for me than that part of it.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Very good, keep going. You want to constantly score at least 30 correct before taking the exam. Test nerves can cause you to miss a few easy ones.

I was just informed of a class on June 8th, which will have a test at the end of the day! I'm signing up for it, and if all goes well...

Ill have to seriously study over the next two weeks.

Best of luck brother! I crammed for a week and got 34/35. But I got lucky. My test was all the easy questions... Like what agency regulates bla bla.. Ha I thought it was a joke at first. I had NO difficult questions hahaha.
Anyway best of luck!

This is apparently called a "ham-cram". Its from 8am-5:30pm and they give you the exam at the end of class. They said last time they only had one person fail.

I'm hoping all the reading that I've already done in the ARRL manual and all the studying that I've been doing will help me that much more.

Yea, you should be fine, the way it's set up, it's almost impossible to fail.

It's nice to see more wheelers getting their ticket! For a min I thought I was the only one haha

I purchased the ARRL manual back in October, and started studying on my own. I read each chapter word for word, and made flash cards for each of the questions from that chapter. I made it through about half of the book before setting it down one day, and forgetting about it.

The problem is that I have absolutely no interest in the 'technical' part of it. I don't have any interest in understanding electricity, I don't have any interest in building radios, and I don't have any interest in learning radio schematics. I'd like to simply obtain my license, buy a pre-built radio, and push to talk.

I'm planning on attending the local radio club's meeting this Thursday, and speaking to them about the classes they offer. I don't learn well on my own, when forced to read a book, so hopefully taking a hands on approach may help me.
I agree with you that learning the "technical" stuff can be boring. However, it is useful even if you only plan on "operating." The technical stuff will let you realize that the rumor that CB antennas want ONLY 17' of coax, not one inch longer or shorter, is garbage. How about connecting your new 2M rig directly to the battery? How about putting fuses on both the hot and ground wires AT the battery, not at the radio?

Knowing the Technician class technical stuff will help you tune your 2M antenna and figure out where to place it depending upon the wavelength of the antenna (vehicle corner, center of roof, front bumper, etc).

Like everyone else is suggesting, tough it out and you'll get your ticket.

Good Luck.

Regards,

Regards,

I'm registered for the Ham-Cram class on June 8th, and I'm continuing to study on my own until then.

It's not hard per say... its confusing. I can read a book 20 times and never understand it, but if I can put my hands on it and actually do it, it only takes once.

I'm going to try and start making regular meetings at my local ham club, and hopefully that'll help me learn and understand a little better.

Just keep taking the practice tests but make sure the questions change. I would take them on a website but quickly realized they were giving me the same 30something questions when there are 100s in the question pool. But I can't remember the website. Sorry.

^ not great advice. Better to learn the reasons, too, as mentioned. It will benefit you in the long run.

Edit: No offense intended, just throwing in my shilings.

Icom V80 Sport to start.

Don't know what I want to install in the Jeep yet. I'll have to talk to a few Elmer's first.

Nice. I have the older v8. It's a pretty good radio. I run a kenwood tk-281 in my jeep and an ic-2100h in my work truck. All badass radios

So.... What's the realistic timeline for the FCC to issue my call number?

If the VEC submits it quickly, maybe a week. Keep an eye on QRZ.

When we hold our VE sessions on Saturdays, we mail off the results the same day. Unless there is a holdup somewhere, the results are available at the FCC website by Thursday, Friday at the latest......unless there is a problem.

The FCC website address can be found on the front of the CSCE your examiners gave you.

Congratulations.

Though this was nearly ten years ago, it seems my upgrade with new call sign took weeks to be issued. Which reminds me that it's nearly time to renew it.

I picked up a Baofeng UV-5RA last night on eBay for $44. It's a Chinese dual band radio that has some good reviews. I figured it will let me get my feet wet and make a few contacts, and if I don't continue in the hobby i won't feel bad for wasted money. If I end up wanting to go further, I'll install a full mobile rig in the Jeep.

I also bought the Nagoya-771 SMA-F antenna to replace the useless stock one.
