If I end up wanting to go further, I'll install a full mobile rig in the Jeep.

I also bought the Nagoya-771 SMA-F antenna to replace the useless stock one.
A guy in my club has one & said its manual loses a lot in the translation and can be very confusing. I think he said he found some better descriptions of how to use & program it on the web.

I've read no less than 400 reviews I'm sure... I spent about 4 hours last night reading review after review and they all say the same thing about the programming. It's a nightmare apparently.

However, most of the reviews are made by Hams with 10, 20, and 30 years of experience, so when you are used to expensive radios, I could see where it might be a pain. I don't have any experience with any radios so I wont have anything to compare it to.

I did find multiple threads on a few forums and multiple youtube videos on manual programming, so I'll probably bypass the instruction manual all together.

Are there any commercially made radios that are made in America?

The manual does leave a lot to be desired, but for the price it's a fun radio packed with features. I program it with software called CHIRP....it's free, Google it.

I've read about it, however I've also read that some folks have had problems with radio lockouts due to using the Chirp program.

Additionally, in order to run Chrip on my Mac, I'd have to install some other plugin called KK7DS Python, and I'm not sure I feel comfortable with that.

What about running it on windows, on your Mac, with parallels or boot camp?

Oh no, I am vehemently against installing windows programs on my Mac.

That's too bad. I run windows 7 (the one before windows 8 or whatever it is) on parallels so that I can run the programs use to tune my R1. No problems whatsoever. That was with 8gb of ram, now I'm running 16gb and my MacBook Pro hardly knows parallels is running.

I'd rather purchase a $400 PC laptop strictly for radio purposes, than open my Mac up to possible issues. I'm highly overprotective of my iMac. I've had it for about 3 years now and have only used about 100gb of the 500gb drive. I keep it as clean as possible.

I've been using an Acer AspireOne Netbook for radio programming, at this point it's 5 years old but all I really use it for is radio programming.

FM amateur HT's - no.
Motorola comercial, maybe, but you need help programing them.
There are some HF rigs; Ten-Tec, Elecraft, SGC.
Most of the QRP kits are small manufacturers.

That's what I did, went and got a $300 laptop. Strictly for programming.

So I've been studying for my Tech test too. Nice to know there are Jeepers here running hams. Test is this Sat but I've been studying on my own out of the book so Im a bit worried.

Saying all this are you all using mobiles or handheld and do u also have a base at home? I'm looking to get involved with skywarn and ares.

I studied since November. If you're passing the practice tests, you'll do fine.

I started with a hand held, or "Handy Talkie" as they are apparently called. The $44 Baoefeng UV-5RA. I wanted to be able to use it anywhere, and wanted something as cheap as possible. If I like ham radio, I'll look at a full mobile rig in a few months.

For all you new hams out there. (And anybody just thinking about it.)
Field day is coming up on June 22/23.

Visit the ARRL site locator Field Day Station Locator and find one (or two) close to you and go visit.

Good chance to meet fellow hams from the local club, see amateur radio in action, maybe get on the air. You do not have to be a member, you don't even need a license.

<dripping sarcasm>I don't know if I'm fit to be in amateur radio... </dripping sarcasm>

I'm not old...
I'm not crotchety...
I'm not arrogant (mostly)...
I don't like arguing about politics...
I don't believe in conspiracy theories...
And if you can believe it, I wasn't born with the innate ability to understand radio frequencies.

And unfortunately, because I made the mistake of exploring the online Ham communities, this is mostly what I've been confronted with. I mean, can you believe that I've lived my entire life without knowing how to program a Baofeng radio. Sheesh! And I had the nerve to ask a few simple questions too!!

...oh yeah, I don't know morse code either.

Just like in this forum, you'll get those guys dead set in their ways that won't let you adapt and evolve to newer better things..

They're not all like that, at least not the local guys here. The internet is a different story. Don't be discouraged.

Those old guys don't know me very well if they think they can scare me off with a little arrogance and a crotchety attitude.

I'm planning on attending a field day next weekend in Rayne, LA. since I'll be home visiting my family anyway. I hope to get some questions answered there, and then hopefully I'll be able to make a meeting of our local club pretty soon. Work has prevented me from going for he last two months.

Thanks!!

I'm all knee deep in this now! LOL

Yesterday I mowed the entire yard with my Baofeng HT attached to my hip and an ext mic/headphone in my ear! LOL LOL

For a 911 dispatcher and self proclaimed 'techie', this hobby is like crack!!!

I'm official! KC3AUV

Now I just have to finally, FINALLY decide on what radio to get, mobile or portable. So many choices, so many specs! I need to find a friendly HAM forum. The ones I've been on the folks are just RUDE. For a hobby that claims to want to draw in new users the online forum folks are terrible.

I need to find a Wrangler Forum equivalent for HAMS!
