I need to find a Wrangler Forum equivalent for HAMS!

Dang!!!! How'd you get yours so fast??

I've been reluctantly using QRZ.com It's hit and miss for friendliness.

BTW... I put in for a vanity name less than 24 hours after my original was issued. I'm hoping to get K9CCH, but we'll see.

Woohoooo!!!

Just made my first two contacts!

I'm visiting my parents in Louisiana and accessed the Saltgrass Repeater system on 443.150.

I talked to a guy in Houston, and another new ham all the way in Lubbock TX!!

I'm only 6.3 miles from the repeater here, so I know it's a distance/antenna position at home in Houston!!

I'm so excited!!

How hard is the General exam?

I just downloaded the study guides for the General question pool, and I'm about to start in on studying for it.

Wow! I'm really happy this thread sparked interest in some and we have some new ham brothers! I have made several contacts on the local repeater systems along my travels. Invited to local ham club breakfasts and meets. I find a lot of friendly hams. Yet again I live in SoCal and the friendliness is usually outside the area.... I know this prob only has to do with the amount of bootleggers who buy a radio and transmit with no license and think its funny to be rude and act like a 15 year old on a cb... I'm sure that sums up what I mean. After a wile of hearing your call sign they start warming up.

I have yet to meet any WF/wheelers/jeepers in SoCal that are hams as well, but it's catching on.
It's a hobby for me, a fun one at that! So to have my mobile 2m/70cm, hand helds and one tri band in the jeep at all times, it's fun to explore areas and do a little research before. Also a base set up with a mobile quad band completes the set! I've even given away a mobile set up to a ham so he could get back on the air!

Anyway I'm glad to see such an interest in new hams!
If anyone happens to be on the WIN System ( 92 repeaters world wide winsystem.org) shoot me a call!
73s!

Those of us who enjoy the hobby, ENJOY ALL IF NOT MOST OF IT!
Yes you can send an email, make a phone call, etc but radio is fun! And how you decide to operate is up to you. It's what makes KJ6YWC me and you you

People like this are the guys that new hams will make contact with in their first couple contacts and it will completely turn them off to it.
I've ran into them and you will too. But I assure you most are friendly. In fact I have been in situations with no cell service needing to make contact to my wife or get information or whatever and been helped out immediately.
This guy needs to stop and smell the roses

I haven't used Echolink yet, although I know that there area a few of them around me. I'll have to see what their numbers are.

I did make my first IRLP contact the other night though. The node closest to me is 3283. If you ever want to set up a contact, let me know!

I got a Beofeng UV5RA today from Amazon.. $34. Now to finish studying so I can get my technician. Hopefully in a few weeks.

For those with vanities, how long did it take? I know what I want to get if it's available K5WGG. 5Whiskey is my call sign at work when talking to ATC and my initials are GG. Would that fit the criteria?

It would as long as you don't plan on working CW much. For code a dit at the end gets dropped off quit a bit especially in contests. I know because I worked CW for years.

It takes about a month. Since not everybody submits for a vanity on-line, they must wait for those who mail in their submissions.

Zed, I think the problem goes way back a long time. When I took my first test in 1954 it was not multiple choice. You had to draw circuits and be able to explain them. Every license required CW. By the time you got your license you could build a rig. The world has changed. Some of the old timers haven't. I kid these old timers. I ask them if their rig is home brew. Usually not. Just a rice box like everyone else has. Club in my area has all grumpie hams. I dropped my membership several years ago. When I joined I offered to bring some modern equuipment and computer to their field day. Nope, I couldn't do that. However, I have met some great amateurs on the air and while traveling. JMHO.

I have zero interest in CW. I just want a radio that can work where my phone and CB/FRS will fail me

That is a 1 X 3 call sign, group C. They are available for Technician class license holders and K5WGG is unassigned.

Get your license, then go for it.

Very good, that's the best way to do it. When you can do 85% on the practice tests you are ready.

Good luck.

So... I am planning on mounting my antenna mount under the hood on the left side fender support and with the battery on the right side of my 2013 JK I am wondering if you have any tips for running the power cables and coax through the firewall.

Should be a rubber grommet on either side of the cab just under the dash.
In my 11 it was secured in place, but inwas able to cut a small hole an feed the wire through. It feels double walled, so I have no fear of it leaking. It is probably 2in diameter. Grab a light and look for it under your dash. Easy to see if you look high enough.

I've been looking into dual band hand-held HAM radios lately and have a question:

Can I can get a HT like the Boafeng UV5R and operate it without a licence as long as I stay on the MURS or FRS frequencies which are license free?

I could monitor any of the other frequencies.

(MURS I'd be limited to 2W of transmit, FRS .5W)

Technically yes, legally no.
