ham radio install and antenna question

I currently have a 92 yj and looking to install at least a 2m/70cm dual band radio in it to hit repeaters in my area. i work for a fire dept in the communications field and also part of a diaster communciations team. Any suggestions on where i can mount my antenna and I am also looking for ideas on mounting the radio. I am wanting to get something with remote head. I had a kenwood a few years ago and it was nice but sold it and cant remember which one it was. It had a blue back light and was real easy to use. Any suggestions out there. At that time I was using it on my fire dept frequencies and was running a regular dual band antenna mounted to the top of my truck. I dont run the hard top all the time but that could be a possible location but need to have a back up in case i want to take the hard top off.

I have an FT-8800R mounted in my Jeep. I use the teraflex antenna mount. That mount is the type that goes behind the tail light. They make them for either driver or passenger side. I mounted the "brain" behind the drivers seat on the wall of the tub in front of the hump. There is a small recess in there. That little bit of a recess kepts the radio from being hit when I load the back of the Jeep. I put it there for 2 reasons. One being able to keep good ventilation around the radio. Secondly, to keep it dry. I mounted my remote head between the visors. I use a diamond dual band antenna.

I'm running an Icom IC-7000 HF/VHF/UHF rig in my 2000 TJ using windshield antenna mounts from ARIZONA ROCKY ROAD ANTENNA MOUNTS FOR JEEP WRANGLER, UNLIMITED AND LIBERTY with great results.

My dual band antenna is the Comet CA2x4SR. It's designed for search & rescue and is very widebanded and durable. I have a couple of these on different vehicles and have never had a problem with them.

I think your Kenwood was probably a TM-V7A. I'm using a Yaesu FTM10 in my other car. It's made for motorsports and motorcycle installations. The head is detachable, waterproof and can even be used an a hand mic as it has the PTT and mic in the head. There's a hand mic and connector kit available, which I use.

You can see pics of my install here: Install pics: Icom IC-7000/Little Tarheel in a TJ

Never had good performance with through-the-glass antenna mounts, but others in my club swear by them. Personally, I also have Teraflex behind-the-taillight mounts and they work great, especially for 2m/70cm. One of mine is set up for a dual-band antenna and the other either gets a CB antenna, or my ATAS 120.

I am considering buying one of these, if you don't mind answering a couple of questions I would appreciate it.

1. Do you have any issues with the tarheel antenna?
2. Do you have an auto controller for the tarheel or are you using the manual control box?
3. Do you have any experience with tire carrier mounting the antenna's?
