Also, there is a repeater at Spider Lake linked to the El Dorado repeater.
I'll deff check it out, I believe I was looking into that one before. Do you think it's worth the extra money for the 8900. It's like 80 more dollars or so but you also get two more bands, can you even use 6 meters with a tech license?

6... the magic band! When it's open there's no telling who you'll hear, or where!

Hi all,
KD7QXE, but not for long if I don't get myself in gear and get it renewed...I've got a portable Yaesu FT 470 that's been collecting dust for several years now. I should dust it off and see if it works anymore.

LOL, nope! You have to catch it right, and I tried mobile for a bit. I bought a tentec transverter, which is sadly out of alignment. I need to fix that, it's been on my "to-do" list for about 8 years.

Seriously, it DOES work. I'm down south where apparently nobody local uses it. With the high solar activity, you never know.

KB3YFB checking in. I plan to have my rig within the next month or so - dual band, but soooo many options to choose from. In the mean time, I've joined the local ham club and am looking into ARES.

My rig is a Yaesu FT-817, a backpacker radio that is low power, but covers a lot of the HAM spectrum.

Howdy! AJ4JZ here. New to the forum and new to Jeeps. I have a '91 Wrangler S with a Yaesu FT-60R HT w/speaker mic installed running to a dual-band whip mounted on the spare tire bumper. I work a lot of HF and hope to get a mobile HF rig in my Jeep. More info on QRZ.com. 73 & God bless, de AJ4JZ

Howdy KC6CME, donnie checking in.
Right now Iv got a Yaesu HT running thru a Diamond mount on the drivers side of the hood with a Larson 2/70 antenna in my 09 Sahara Unlimited.
Eventually, Iv been thinking about a FT 8900 as a mobile.
and changing the antenna to a Comet SSB 15.

As far as I know, there isnt any code required for the test.
I believe you can if you want to.
Hope this helps.

Green,

No code required. Take a few practice rounds on QRZ.Com, then check the ARRL page for VE testing location.

If you passed before, should have no problem now. Might need a brush up, I'll bet you are good to go as is. Have at it.

FWIW, EHAM also has a practice test.
Do a search for ham practice tests and there are several
sites to help.

Something else to consider is go onto the ARRL website.
They have a listing of local ham groups and where they are located.
Look up one near you and see when they are giving a Tech class.
Good Luck.

Howdy fellers.

Going to take my test next w/e (4-14). Those practice sites are a blessing, I think I'll be OK as I'm just going for my tech.

I am looking at getting a Yaesu FT 2900, and was curious what antenna ya'll might recommend to use with it in my YJ. I'd like to do a rear bumper or taillight mount, but I imagine I may not have a good enough plane if I do.

Advice is appreciated! Thanks.

Good Luck on the exam.
FWIW, if you feel confident, ask your VE, if you pass the Tech would it be possible to take the General as well.
Some will allow that.

HF/VHF rig in 2012 Wrangler Unlimited

N1ZX.. Removed the Icom 706 Mk 2 G from the Grand Cherokee and looking for a good spot to place the rig, HF 102" SS whip Ant and Smart Tuner, in a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Sport. The VHF/UHF will probably use a small Larson quarter wave on the rear center light post.

An alternate VHF/UHF Ant would be a 5/8 somewhere on the rear end pending wife's approval

There seems to be less RFI coming off the rear of the vehicle than what is coming off of the front. Not so with the Sahara or Grand Cherokee.
I have not applied any additional grounding straps or ferite beads yet.

Anyone having difficulty with 100 Watts RF getting into the onboard electronics, possibly frying the computer, etc. ?
Any placement suggetions ?
