I see many HF installations, and it looks like you have antennas mounted
in various places. Has anyone taken the time to look at RF levels in
the vicinity of your head? (!!!). With so little steel around the passenger
compartment in the jeep, I'm reluctant to put a VHF tranceiver in the
jeep for lack of a tidy mounting location (i.e. in a place more than
2 meters from my head)...

jeep installation

i created a go-box... put my 350ar into this along with a power supply.. hooked it to my power inverter (3000 watt).. i've played with a few spots for the radio head and am leaning towards the cup mounts... my antenna is mounted on the spare tire rack @ the back... i have an '07 JK

the go box allows me to easily move the radio from the jeep to my home to use as my base. also great for emcomm use.

hope this helps..

Just passed my General. I am running an Alinco dr119 2m for now. Want to get a dual band in the near future. I noticed that some folks here don't post their location in their profiles.... Just so you know that if you are wanting to keep your location unknown you should not post your call sign publicly. All you have to do is go to QRZ, search your call sign and bingo, your address, real name etc. Just sayin'

Pat, I'm curious about your plans for an HF antenna. What antenna are you planning on installing and how are you thinking of mounting it?

I have an old set of mono band sticks using the same 3/8" mount my 2 meter will use. At some point I will get second mount for the other side.

Hi Guys, de N4NIA

I'm between Jeeps here and hope to order a 2013 Rubicon in the next month or so. My plans are to go with my IC-706 (nice install, KL0NR) and maybe use the Outbacker I currently have. I'm also interested in any comments about the performance of the TarHeel or similar antennas as an alternative.

Regarding the on-glass dual bander; was that install on the windshield or on the hardtop glass? I'm thinking I could install a Larson on the hardtop glass and accomodate an alternative when I have the top off.

If only the K3 had a detachable head.....

73s de WD5COT. New to the forum, but not to Jeeps or amateur radio (although it has been a while since I was very active in the hobby). Would appreciate any info (PMd of course, don't want to hijack) on experiences with a Yaesu FTM-10R, and/or an OFFROAD DURABLE dual band 2m/70cm antenna. CUL

What AM are you refering to.

Will a ham radio receive the AM broadcast band - not usually.
Will it receive AM aircraft band - some do.
Can they transmit in AM mode - some can on HF.

Most modern HF radios have an AM mode for those that may want to use it, and it allows compatibility with many of the vintage AM radios still being used out there by hams. For general communications, SSB is preferable for a number of reasons, and there are few advantages of AM in an offroad environment.

Though it's not legal, an HF rig in AM mode could be tuned to a CB frequency if the radio is capable of being operated "out of band."

W0FG, Rick...licensed since '63, Extra for 20 years or so. Just picked up the new JK on Saturday so haven't decided what to do radio-wise...probably mount the TM-D700 and Garmin 18 that I took out of the Dakota.

Question, I have an ICOM FC11 handheld that I bought for desert races. The 19 channels all have a 6 digit frequency, ie:151.625, is the Districts channel #1. Is this radio considered HAM, and would I need a lisence to operate it?

151.625 is a GMRS frequency, not ham. GMRS is a licensed service.
There is no test required, just fill out the application and pay the fee. I believe the license is good for 5 years.

Actually, 151.625 is the "Red Dot" itinerant business band frequency. It does require a license for legal use.
