Has anyone swapped stock radio for aftermarket (w/GPS) in a '12 JK Sport?

I'd like to get a '12/'13 JK Sport S with the stock radio. What is involved in swapping it out for an aftermarket in dash double DIN GPS/stereo?

All Crutchfield says is that modifications are needed.

1. Does the dash need to be modified?
2. Are wiring adapters needed?
3. Where does the GPS antenna go?
4. I've searched for a JK "How to" and come up empty. Any links??
5. Any recommendation on a good aftermarket double din unit. (I care more about good GPS then audio and won't do any speaker upgrades)

I haven't seen any builds with a double DIN gps install (outside of the factory swaps). From what I have heard, there is a bracket in the back of the bay that needs to be removed, bent, or cut. I know that you need the PAC harness. I am interested in this as well, as I would like to replace mine with a good nav unit, but I want good audio too.

I've got a Kenwood 9990 double din and it fits fine. I had mine installed. I asked about if he had to modify anything and he said no..just need a dash kit that runs about ~$15 ish? It only covers a small gap on the right and left sides. I've been meaning to get pics for a couple weeks now..ill try soon

Oops forgot...the gps sensor goes on top of the speaker soundbar ...the wires run up inside the rollbar cover.
If sound does not matter they have cheaper units than my Kenwood..as far as gps/ nav. Can't go wrong with units that have garmin. Go to CNET reviews and check out profesional and personal reviews on about any unit on the market...side note on personal reviews...many said on my 9990 that they were disappointed on not being able to add thier own backgrounds... If they only read the manual. You can. So don't believe everything that some people say

I was just reading the Quadratec catalogue. They have kits with adaptors that make the wheel controls work. Dash mounts and all kinds of odds and ends.

I plan on ordering my stuff through Crutchfield. They provide free kits and the harness at half off when ordering a head unit. Plus you can order the SWI (steering wheel interface) there as well. It all comes with wiring instructions for your vehicle. They are supposed to have outstanding service and tech support as well.

This is an excelon so its supposed to be better sound q. So far the HD radio sound is excellent however reception is still not great so I'm thinking the antenna is suspect. My stock hundred had crap reception as well

Bluetooth sound quality for streaming is actually quite good. With unconnect and stock I ended up hardwiring it was so lousy

The Pandora Android integration is super nice.

The map works quickly and overall speed is good. Phone integration is excellent with android. Traffic. Seems to only cover major roads though

Did you have to do any thing special to fit it in the dash? Did you get the SWI (steering wheel interface) to keep the steering wheel controls? And what module for uconnect are you referring to? Thanks for the good info!

I'm waiting for the idatalink maestro for unconnect. I bought the pac can bus adapter for Chrysler that crutchfield recommended. If the idatalink bombs ill by the pac steering wheel adapter. Right now i have lost steering wheel controls. I soldered about 5 wires and ran a line out to my ms8 processor along with remote amp turn on. No cutting of stock wires so completely reversible. Removed the stock radio and one stock mounting plate using two bolts. This is a 2012 jku with infinity and uconnect btw.

Literally took me under 1 hour as I was waiting for a conference call to start.

Used the mounting adapter provided by Crutchfield and it sits quite nicely. Ill try to add a pic

I hadn't heard about the idatalink maestro until you mentioned it. I checked out their website and it looks like they are starting with Ford Sync and that isn't even available yet. Sounds like it may be awhile before it comes out for uconnect.

Idatalink maestro looks interesting but yeah its going to be a wait. I would like the source switch controls to be hard buttons instead of all touch screen (or use voice)

As to mods, I have a few other things I've done

Here's my main thread:

Short version is I now have two 4 channel class D amps (polk D4000.4) with a bridged 400 watts into the sub, morel xt23 tweeters in stock location, Seas Excel midranges in front stock location on custom mounting plates, Polk MM651 in soundbar, replaced stock sub with Kenwood Excel 8", and poly filled and dynamatted all enclosures.

Best bang for the buck was the MS-8 hands down. Even with everything I've done when I turn it out I'd have a lot tuning to do to get to sound like it does with it in. It's actually not a bad amp straight up on it's own as well (driving all speakers) The other stuff is definitely an improvement for sound quality, and the Kenwood is functionally way better than the stock head unit for music playback etc.

The Kenwood slaughters the stock deck in bluetooth sound quality. It seems to be pretty darn close to the aux in straight out of my android. Pandora control from the headunit is also awesome. HD Radio sound quality is also no comparison. *WAY* better. CD playback is marginally better for sound quality, way better for transport. My stock CD skipped all over the place. Same CD in the new unit is rock solid. Aux in sound quality again is similar to marginal improvement in sound quality

Just installed the Pioneer AVH-P8400BH in my '12 sport its a great unit. (not a nav radio)

You do need to remove the metal bracket behind the factory radio so the Pioneer will fit. I used the screws that attached the bracket to support a piece of heavy gauge solid wire looped around the radio to provide rear support which did the job nicely.

To do the install you need the following accessories:

PAC C2R-CHY4 CANBUSS adapter
PAC SWI-PS if you want to retain steering wheel controls
PAC PAC-TR7 if you want to bypass the parking brake lockout
Metra 40-EU10 antenna adapter
Metra 95-6511 Dash Kit or Scosche CR1291B Dash Kit

If anyone has questions let me know.

I just ordered my 2013 Sport S and now need to get serious about finding a new HU with in dash NAV.

Is there an aftermarket unit that:
- Doesn't sacrifice steering wheel controls
- Uses the Uconnect/Bluetooth feature that's part the connectivity package
- Uses the std. OEM combined Sirius and GPS antenna connector
- Compatible with the premium Alpine speaker/amplifier system (probably same as Infinity)
- Looks decent (almost like factory)

OR, is the factory 430N (RHB) unit the best solution:
- 100% plug and play with all other factory features from what I understand. (but expensive)

Just finished installing a DNX6990HD as well. Went with Crutchfield - their installation directions were helpful and I like that I could call them any time for help - didn't need to though. Install was pretty straightforward.

I love the 6990. Processor is faster, so you don't have the speed issues that the previous models have. I love being able to use voice to access my phone's directory to make a call. The mobile phone connects via bluetooth the as soon as the 6990 boots (wish that was faster, but you can't have everything). The ipod interconnect is nice - it's pretty easy to control the ipod via the radio's screen. Navi is good, but it seems like it tells me that the traffic is congested ahead only once I'm in it. Put in the steering wheel control module (PAC-SWI) but it doesn't allow scrolling through the presets like the stock radio could, which is a bummer. Does volume control, though, so it was worth it.

If you know which end of a soldering iron to pick up and how to use a screwdriver, you probably could install this beast. No dash cutting or ugly mods, though I did have to cut an interior bracket.

I also just finished installing a 6990 last night in my '12 JKU. The worst part in my opinion was finding room near/behind/under the head unit for the Sirius tuner, the ginormous iPod cable, and the two PAC wiring harnesses. Hacksawing the bracket was annoying, but straightforward.

I replaced the four 6.5 Infinity "premium" speakers (dash and soundbar) with the Mopar Kicker ones, left the tweeters in place for now, and added an 4 channel amp for the Kickers and one for the stock sub. The amps are both mounted under the steering column. Infinity amp is still mounted, but unused. Tomorrow I'll replace the stock tweeters and sub. If I had planned my upgrade ahead of time instead of just hitting BUY BUY BUY all over Amazon, Crutchfield, and eBay, I would have opted for a set of components for the front woofers/tweeters, but it'll all work out eventually.

Matching the pinouts for the speaker outputs wasn't exactly fun, but in the end, all 6 speakers and the sub are cranking out pure audio bliss. My hands are cut to hell from working hours in the tight squeeze under the dash and behind the kick panel, but my cabling is fairly tidy in spite of the blood, sweat, and cursing involved. My only gripe is that my faceplate isn't perfectly aligned with the double din cutout in the dash panel. I can see one of the mounting screws in the gap of plastic. I'm not sure if I warped something in the subdash or what, but I'll tinker around a bit more this weekend to make it better.

Overall I think the Kenwood iPhone integration beats the RBZ/uConnect combo I had in there before by miles, and I'm no longer reliant upon a portable dash-mounted nav unit that I had to remember to lock up every time I left the car.

I think the new head unit is showing just how bright/harsh the stock tweeters are. From what I've gathered, the stock premium Infinity amp was just passing through the full range signal to them, so any change at this point will be for the better. I have the Infinity tweeters currently running directly to the HU via high level, while all the Kickers are running via RCA to the amp. I'm hoping the crossovers in the Kicker KS13s arriving tomorrow will alleviate the shrill sound blasting my ears. Or then again, maybe it was always this bright with the RBZ and Infinity amp and I just didn't realize or know any better. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I just emailed PAC and they said the only harness I needed for my 12' was the RP4-CH11. They said it would keep all steering wheel functions and leave options for accessory and navi outputs. I have a sport s with base radio and going Sony XAC-601, so maybe that's why schj98 listed so many adapters.

I agree - it's pretty crowded behing the radio for all of the cables. My saving grace was that I didn't have the Sirius tuner.

In regards to the fit. Mine seemed to fit just fine. Now that I recall, I did have to modify the interior bracket a bit. Luckily it was plastic and not visible, so I didn't have to be too careful. Just took a flush trim router bit and a drill. Here's the pics:


As for the Ipod cable: I chose to put that on the outside - so that I could plug either a USB player or an iPod in. I just found a panel mount USB extender and a 4-contact 3.5mm audio cable and ran them down and past the the sticks on the floor and up into the storage console between the front seats (see pic). Besides the Kenwood unit I had to buy a PAC-C2R-CHY4 adapter and a PAC-SWI adapter (for the steering wheel controls).

Oh, I also had the stock base radio, so that might have made my job easier as well.

Oh, one more thing for those who are installing it themselves. You'll need to cut the rear unit bracket in order for the 6990 to fit. It sits pretty snuggly on the AC plenum, so you aren't using the loss of any support back there. Here's the cut:

I used the Metra Axxess CHTO-03 Interface wiring harness when I installed my DNX6910HD. Far better than the PAC units as you can update it. You can use it for steering wheel controls , factory amp, & GPS. It costs more but well worth it.

Btw with this harness you don't lose the ability to fade as you do with most of the PAC units
