Caraudio.com has a forum with a very large amount of the info u are looking for. It can get complicated at times, but there is a lot to know.

a subwoofer is what gives you the low frequencies(that boom boom boom sound) you need to power it with an amp, the amp ties into the stereo unit and is powered through the cars battery to work. just replacing factory speakers will give you a better sound, you don't have to power it with an amp, but to be able to crank it up nice and loud for when you have the top down you will need an amp.

the start of a nice system is the headunit, fallowed by the speakers and subwoofer(s).

honestly its pretty staight forward if you want to just throw a sound system in your jeep. i install mine myself with no problems. you just need to buy the right kit for your year jeep and buy a plug adapter that is vehicle specific. then just splice the wire together by matching colors. the kit i bought had step by step directions. definenlty easy mode mod
