Question Hidden Iphone charger powered by switched 12v cable?

Hello everyone,

after my first electronic job (http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/ster...ml#post5215601) finished, an idea came into my head:

Right now, my aux cable is coming out behind the dashboard since it is connected to the stereo's backside. However, I still need to use the iPhone usb charger for the CIG lighter..

Since I am lucky enough to own one of the TJs which have the switched and unswitched auxiliary cables taped behind the glovebox, I was wondering if it would be possible to connect a stock iPhone cable to the switched power cable of my Jeep. This way, everything would look nice and clean. Is that even possible? And if so, how?

Thanks for your answers!

Something like this would allow you to have a single iPod connector outside of your dash, and then it would tie into your radio's switched power source as well as it's aux input behind the dash. This would provide you with a charger and aux cable all in one with only a single wire and connection into your iPod.

The MSRP is $50, but you could probably find them cheaper if you looked around. The one that GotNet mentioned would only charge your iPod, you would still need the second cable plugged into your headphone jack to get audio through to your radio.

How about something like this?
What I did was run the AUX cable from behind, just like you said. Then, I tapped into my cigarette lighter's switched power, from behind, and I connected an aftermarket cigarette lighter with an USB adapter plugged into the aftermarket lighter. To connect the aftermarket cigarette lighter, drop in the after market with attached USB cable, behind the stereo, and pull out your cigarette lighter, by unscrewing the four screws. Then, you have clear access to the back of the cigarette lighter.(Note:You have to remove the console plate to see the four screws, and you can also take out the four screws for the Air assembly and pull it slightly forward to facilitate routing of the wires.) I routed the wires through the cigarette lighter hole, to the back of the cigarette lighter. Connected the power and the ground, and Wahla, power to the aftermarket lighter.

I then took it a step further. I brought a Bracketron phone holder and I cut off the front bracket. I grinded it smooth and repainted it black. I drilled two holes, into the side of it, to hold the Akron gooseneck. I routed the USB and the Aux cable through the Gooseneck. This setup does not move. It is very sturdy, and my Phone is right to the side of my face, and up, out of the way. The finished product is the picture below. No more do I have wires hanging all over my console. My original lighter is free to use. And, I don't have to look down and search for my phone, and take my eyes of the road.

Later, I actually put some slack into the wires coming out of my dash(see 2nd picture), and pushed them behind the bracket so they can't be seen. With the gooseneck being anchored to the Bracketron, and between the console, adds stability. This thing does not move, and it takes two hands to bend it. Basically, I bent it before I mounted it, so I didn't need to make major adjustments after it was mounted.

as I rather use the existing auxiliary cables in the glove box, than have a hidden cig lighter behind the dashboard. Anyway, thanks a lot for the detailed instructions ChasUGC, like the mount (but have one already on top of the dash).

sounds really promising and like a nice touch to my initial idea! I have an Alpine radio with a very weird AUX connector in the back, if I had known about this product I would have rather bought this Alpine Aux Connector. Since I have the first, do you think I could just use your suggestion, don't use the yellow connector, and buy an adapter like this?

Thanks a lot love those ideas. Price-wise I would like to go for the first idea. Is it really not possible to cut an iPhone cable and connect it with a normal wire to the switched power of the car?

Don't cut the iphone wire! They are difficult to connect that way and still requires 5V. Also, as you upgrade (30 pin, lightning, android etc.) you just swap cheap cables.

Found this one; a little less: 12V to 5V Inverter 5 Voltage Mini USB Hard Wired Car Charger 4 GPS Tablet Phone | eBay

Understood, thanks a lot! Can someone explain how to connect something like this? I see there are two cables. Do I connect the red to the switched auxiliary power in the glove box? Where do I connect the black one to?

Black goes to any ground point even a bolt or screw on the chassis. Not much current to worry about.
