How close were you?
Are both radios new?
How good a match did you get when tuning the antennas?
Check coax and antenna mounts for shorts.
Is either radio SSB and are you sure you're on AM?
Do you have another radio you can test?

Doesn't matter. We just had to get a new mic for Amy's brand new 2 meter ham radio.
There are still other possibilities though,
