Installing new 6 1/2" Rollbar Speakers

Hello, recently decided it was time to upgrade my roll bar speakers, and read through a few pages of the forums here about people that have done it. Unfortunately it seems everyone knows a little bit more than me about the subject when it comes to wiring.

I bought today Sony Xplod 6 1/2", but when I removed my factory speakers I realized it looks like this;

and my new speakers do not have such a simply plug-and-play feature to them. Instead, the Xplods have;

I have a sneaking suspicion that all I have to do is remove the white plug off the wires and they will be ready to wrap on to the new set. However, just a little hesitant to do it without re-assurance from someone who knows. My friend suggested that I buy one of the kits online that will plug in and then have an adapter for new speakers.

All help is appreciated, I'm anxious to get these in! Riding around without sound..

it looks like you could just cut off the white connector and just put on normal speaker connectors. you just have to find out which is positive and which is negative.

Do the wires need something placed on the end or does the bare wire go around the connectors on the speaker?

the new speakers should have come with 4 wires. 2 with bigger connectors and 2 with smaller connectors that go on the speakers. you can just splice those wires on to the factory one. or you get new connectors and crimp those on.

just make sure you dont mix up the positive and negative wires.

OK, I found those. Applied them to the speakers, had a feeling something was missing..What I don't understand here is the last step between these new black wires and the plug that's hanging out of my speaker case.

Do I cut the white thing off and then..?

Yep...you can either buy an adapter from somewhere like Crutchfield.com or since it's simple...just cut the connector off and splice the wires together.

okay the white connector hanging out of your speaker case in your picture has two wires coming out of the back of it. one of the wires is negative and the other is positive. i have no clue which is which try googleing it.

but after you find out you cut off the white connector and crimp the negative to the negative and the positive to the positive.

Well, the speakers I were trying to use were;
Sony XS-GT1626A 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers — also fit in 6-3/4" openings at Crutchfield.com

They sounded great at the store, way better than the other ones around the same price. Unfortunately, it's like 1/4 inch too big to fit in the original hole. So, I don't really feel like doing any modding.

Could you suggest a set that y'all own that fit normally?

I'd say stay away from Pioneers 6.5s. I had to do much more modification than I wanted to squeezing those in.

Can anybody get some decent quality photos of the openings in the stock sound bar?

I wanna see what it is you guys are having to modify to make the speakers fit...before I tear into it myself. lol

If you look at the picture I posted of the wires you can see part of the enclosure. It's basically thin plastic.

You only got 2 choices...if choice #1 doesn't work, try choice #2. If neither one works... go bang your head against the wall cuz you screwed up.

...or turn the radio on and turn up the volume a little. lol

just take the sound bar off (easy to do) put it on the ground flipped up. set the new speaker in and have your drill and bit ready put new holes in and screw'em in. (not too much to modify may have to cut the fabric a little for the new holes) this is what i did with 6.5'' speakers took about 15 mins total off and back on. good luck...

I actually just got done installing these pioneer 6.5's and didn't have to modify the openings at all. The stock mounting holes even worked.

Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-G1643R 6.5-Inch 2-Way Speakers: Electronics

I ended up with these after going to best buy and listening to all of the 6.5's side by side. They sounded better than the alpines and sony but not as nice as the infinitys. They were $54 plus tax in the store but only $34.49 shipped from amazon.

The grills look pretty decent and I never realized the light cover on the soundbar rattled that much after getting the new ones in (had to fix that). I also upgraded the fronts to 5 1/4 JBL's for $33 shipped from ebay and the adapter plates for $18 shipped from ebay. The plates seem like they will be a little flimsy when you take them out of the package but they actually provide solid support when they are all mounted up. I also cut off and reused the stock front speaker connectors and soldered them to the new speakers.

So I paid $86 total for 4 new speakers. I have a sony xplod head unit and it is night and day difference from the stock setup. Not a ton of bass but I wasn't expecting any. I can actually hear the radio now with top and doors off while going 70 down the freeway.

Moral of the story, some of the 6.5's fit without any modification and sometimes cheap is ok.
