JK CB crazy problem

So I have installed my uniden Pro520XL, fire ring cable, 4' firestick on a rear gate bracket. Wired the power to the outlet on the center console. Routed the antenna cable under the carpet. Did everything as neat and clean as I could. Went to test the radio and tune the antenna. When I power up, everything is fine. When I key the mic, everything is fine. When I actually speak, all of a sudden the whole dash lights up. chime sounds, and the windshield wipers cycle twice. What the heck?

So I checked my power. I jumpered the power cable straight to the battery. Same problem, so I don't think my power cable has anything to do with it. I move my CB mount from on top of the dash to down on the floor. I'm thinking the antenna cable in the dash may be causing issues. Nope same problem with it there. I'm running low on ideas. Anyone got anything?

My SWR was just over 2 without tuning. I am also running an aftermarket headunit (with PAC adapter) and a hardwired radar detector and they are both working fine.

Sounds like somewhere you've got a weird short...bad ground maybe...but I don't know. That's got me stumped.

Gonna try and reroute the antenna cable a bit. It is pretty close to some cables in the tailgate. Not sure if that would cause the problem, but it's an idea I haven't tried. I just have the worst luck with electronics over the last few years. Everything I buy ends up being defective, but I have to spend hours troubleshooting since I install everything myself.

I'm not sure what you mean by power on center console, but

You may have grounded it there also, try power(+) and ground (-) STRAIGHT to the battery, with nothing off the leads and the Antenna cable, if it's a commercial R/G 58U is super shielded and insulated, shouldn't effect any dash leads

Good luck

Yes, that was one of the steps I tried. I disconnected the power leads (12VDC and ground, also just called red and black, or positive and negative) and hooked them directly to the battery. The problem was exactly the same. I honestly have no clue what to do, because like you said, it is a shielded cable, it should not cause interference. I have read that CB's can be different though, because of the relatively high amount of power going through the cable.

well, I don't know if your driving a 1944 Willy's or a fairly new Wrangler

It's the Electronic Control Module (Computer) under one of your front seats, or could be the harness from the ECM to the dashboard, only reacts when you speak into the mic, which transmitts a lot of power (4 watts) thru the antenna cable and that may affect the ECM outputs because of the ant. cable close proxmity--It's just a thought

Sorry, it's a JK 2010. And I didn't take the time to figure out if the ECU was actually under the seat or not. I think it is though. I moved the cable so it no longer went under the passenger seat, and bang! It's working like a champ now. Glad it's working, I just wasted like 4 hours LOL.

And in case anyone is interested...

My problem came back. It was working for a few days, and then it started happening again. I can only think that the CB is defective? Possibly the cable? I took everything out, going to do some testing with a spare CB next weekend. Ahhhh the joys of DIY electronics. I get to waste another Saturday troubleshooting glitches instead of out enjoying my Jeep on the trail.

I have a similar problem, and I cannot figure it out. The only difference is, my accelerator completely cuts out on me. Figure anything out yet?

Go to a CB shop, or radio shop and ask them to tune it for you...

Your bleeding over into the Jeeps electronics. The radiation from the Antenna is probably doing it. The CB should not be doing it at all. You can verify this by getting the problem to occur, and then unhooking the antenna from the CB. If the problem goes away, it has to be the antenna. Interesting that that frequency or harmonic would interfere with the Jeeps electronics. You could probably shield any wiring that the antenna cable is routed close to with some braided shielding or copper tape. Attach one end to some ground point or youre wasting time. Again, interesting that the Jeeps electronics would be affected.
I can easily see someone with an overamplified CB causing problems with Jeepers on a trail. A friend of mine had such a CB, and he could activate a nearby carwash with it. We got free carwashes until the owner pulled up and saw a line of muddy trucks being washed but no one putting money in to turn the machines on.

I got mine fixed. I do not believe (at least in my case) it was an antenna problem. I have my cable routed along the roll bar out the gate and mounted on the spare tire carrier. What I changed was how I routed the power to the battery. I had it going along the top of the windshield to the left, down the door, under the dash. There is an access hole under there. It then went accross the firewall in the engine compartment and hooked up to the battery. I ripped out the entire power system and started over. I ran it like this guy did in his write up..... Project-JK.com - Jeep JK Wrangler Resource » Affordable Jeep JK Wrangler CB Radio SolutionMidland Model-1001Z ...Now I will admit, at first it did not work and I was pissed. Then I shut my gate and everything has worked fine since. Hope this helps.
