marine speakers

I've got an alpine head, 4x60 under the passenger seat, 6"sub under the driver seat. Replaced the dash and upper bar speakers with Alpines. I never hear the dash speakers and was thinking of putting in a pair of (water proof-ish) marine speaker in the back corners instead.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Would like to spend under 200 for the pair. Also - this is a soft top tj.

Look into Polk Audio. All of their stuff is marine certified.
DB521's are the most popular dash speaker from my experience.

So long as the speaker cone is made from polyurethane or mylar, it's fine for a Jeep that may see damp conditions. You just want to avoid speakers with paper cones which aren't all that common for vehicle applications. It's tough to beat the Polk DB series.

So is there a killer speaker that will fit in the front dash? I hardly hear the alpines I put in there and was thinking I could put something more substantial in the back... something with strong low mids.

Some speakers are designed with a lot of power hitting them in mind so they will barely be audible with a standard low power headunit. Those have a low Sensitivity rating, 83 or 84 dB as an example. Other speakers like the Polk DB series are designed to sound good with much lower power levels and they'll have a much higher Sensitivity rating like 90 dB or higher. With a standard car radio or aftermarket head unit without an aux power amplifier, stick with speakers with a 90 dB or higher Sensitivity rating and you should be pretty happy with the results. Again, the Polk DB series of speakers fits right into the high sensitivity rating so they would be among the best choices for a speaker for a Jeep.

Even a great speaker can sound bad if it's not a good match, Sensitivity-rating wise, for the radio or amplifier it is being connected to.
