My CB Radio Brace Project

I have researched for a while, trying to find the ideal location for my CB.
I've never really liked having them up under the dash, or shoved between the seats. But, being in a jeep, & trying to install one up near the roof, you are pretty limited to what you can do.

Some folks like to run metal tubing from the windshield back to the roll bar. For me, this wouldn't work. When the top comes off, I don't really want too much obstructions above me. (That's why the top comes off, right?)

So, having to work with what the jeep has to offer, I've decided to create a CB Bracket that runs from side to side. It bolts down to the roll bars, using the same bolt holes that are used for the door surrounds.

I used 1" x 1" square tubing, & some 1/4" plate steel.
The plate steel was welded to the square tubing, where everything is flush at the top. That way, when I install a soft top (or Spider Sun Shade), everything is smooth on top. I cut the square tubing down to 45", so that it would fit in between the roll bars.

The only things left to do is to -
  • drill the 2 holes in the middle plate that will hold the CB radio's bracket in place;
  • glue 3 pieces of rubber to the side of the brace that gets close to the windshield (just in case); &,
  • paint the brace BLACK.
I'll post pictures once everything is installed.

It is very similar to the Arizona Rocky Road radio mount.

I have the Arizona RockyRoad mount and love it. You are able to hide the wiring inside for a clean install also.

The plastic header up above the rear view mirror is hollow. I figured I would hide the wiring up behind that.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you on this.

Here are some pictures of my project.
1st Picture - Shows the nut & the tip of the bolt, going from underneath the roll bar, through the roll bar, then through the bracket. Also shows the relationship of the other components.
2nd Picture - Shows where the antenna cable & wiring go into & exit the 1 inch square tubing.
3rd Picture - Shows the central mounting bolt. (The wiring was tucked in, behind the CB.)
4th Picture - Shows the antenna clearance from the hardtop roof.

I will try to locate my 2D drawing of the bracket, and send that to you, as well.

Hope this helps.

On a side note -

In the evenings, between 5:30 & 7:00pm, I can hear "skips" on channels 26 & 28. So far, I have heard them from California, Connecticut, Florida, & Arizona.
Of course, they can't hear me.
But I can hear them.
But I am only hearing one side of their conversations.
The loudest & clearest voice I keep hearing is from someone that calls himself "Motor Mouth".

Even though they can't hear me, it's still kinda fun to listen in.

**Edit**
I can hear these skips on my Cobra, but I couldn't hear them when I was on my GE CB radio.

I think I mislabeled one of the items in Picture #1.
It said "Plastic Header", which should have said "Plastic Headliner".

But that would still be wrong. It should have said "1 Inch Square Tubing", instead.
