Need help lowering SWR

I've got an old 23 channel CB and I can't get the SWR down to a decent reading. It's ~2.5 on 1 and ~2.9 on 23. I'm guessing that something must be wrong with my antenna setup. Here's some pictures.

What have you tried so far?
How far above the roof line does the antenna sit?
Is your coax coiled up anywhere?
Are you sure your radio is in good working order?

It's a Radioshack 64" stainless steel whip.

I've got it hooked up to a cigarette lighter plug.

It was free. A guy at work said he had one he didn't use anymore and he gave it to me.

So far, I've just been measuring the SWR and cutting the antenna.

How far above the roof line does the antenna sit?
I'm gonna guesstimate that the antenna is about 1 1/2 to 2 feet above the roof.

Is your coax coiled up anywhere?
The coax isn't coiled up anywhere. It just goes down under the drivers seat then up near the roll bar and along the side until it gets to the antenna.

Are you sure your radio is in good working order?
I guess. I don't know how to tell. The guy I got it from said it worked fine when he had it.

Did you get a change as you cut?

Sometimes it would go down, sometimes it wouldn't.

Cutting the Antenna isn't a good way to adjust your SWR. The antenna's are made and tuneded before shipped. I would recommend and adjustable antenna like the Fire-stick. The Fire-Sticks have a lifetime warranty.

Get one thats about 36" long and get a spring for the base. The springs are about 3-4" long. That will give you about 6" to 1' above your roof top. The tip of the Fire-stick is SWR adjustable and easy to tune in your SWR.

I noticed that you have the Antenna mount on the side of the Jeep. This unfortunatly is not the best place as Tree branches will hit the antenna when you travel in the forest, and with out a spring it will break the antenna mount, and where you mount it will also effect your SWR.

I recommend somewhere on the rear of the Jeep. Mine is above the tail light. Also attaching the other 2 screws on the mount will give you a better ground on the antenna. Also make sure the CB itself has a good ground.

If you do decide to move the antenna mount as I suggested. You can put 2 bolts with washers in the holes that are on the side and paint them green with touch up paint.

I moved the mount to the back of the Jeep today and it helped out. I still couldn't get the SWR down to where I wanted it(the antenna was too short) so I switched it with an old fiberglass antenna that my dad had. It's still too short, but it's better, the SWR is a hair above 1 on 23 and around 2 on 1(versus 2 on 23 and 2.5 on 1). I'll prolly see about getting another antenna someday, but this'll do for now. The next thing on my list is getting an external speaker. I had the upper doors off and I couldn't hear a thing. I might be able to get one for free or dirt cheap.

Thanks for the help.
